New York Jets 2011: Who's Santonio Holmes Blaming Now?
Breaking News! And this one is a shocker: New York Jets' WR Santonio Holmes is at it again, pointing his finger for the Jets lack of production throughout the season, thus far.
Holmes was re-signed by the Jets this offseason for a five-year $45 million, and was made Captain by head coach Rex Ryan, this season, has been the most consistent Jet the past three weeks...in calling out his own team. Is he right for doing so?
The Jets are 2-3, going back home to face the winless Miami Dolphins, for Monday Night Football. The Jets need to snap this three-game losing streak and beat the Dolphins. Has and will the blame game help the Jets accomplish anything? No. But that doesn't stop Holmes from voicing his opinion, and he definitely isn't shy about it. "I may be criticized again for saying it, but it starts up front," Holmes said Thursday.
Let's take a look at some areas of the offense that Holmes has placed blame on the past few weeks, shall we?
This Week Up: The O-Line
1 of 4"The big guys know it. If they give Mark enough time to sit in the pocket and complete passes, I think everything changes," Holmes said.
Holmes is right. Sanchez is lucky he's still intact after five brutal games in which he got devoured by defenses, well, save for the Jaguars game.
Sanchez needs some more time in the pocket to make some plays. Get the ball to his playmakers. The O-line is vital to any successful offense in the NFL, and right now, the Jets O-line isn't getting it done. They are not the dominant force they were the past two seasons.
The run-blocking is abysmal and it is noticeable in the RB's numbers. If there is no running game then it doesn't open up the passing game. Then where does that leave the Jets' offense? It has been clear that the Jets' O has been struggling the past few weeks.
Last Week: OC Brian Schottenheimer
2 of 4Last week the Jets were going against a New England Patriots defense that ranks 32nd in pass defense.
And what did the Jets' air-game look like?
Sanchez completed 16 of 26 passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns. You'd think that the Jets would want to attack the Pats through the air some more.
It's understandable that Rex and Schotty wanted to have a conservative pass-game and run the ball to control the clock and keep Brady off the field and Holmes realizes that, but they should've gone to the air a little more.
Holmes thinks that there should be more of a vertical game, take some more shots down the field. The short routes the Jets consistently run are predictable and opposing defenses have been picking up on it and shutting it down. The Jets need to mix up the play-calling, but again, Sanchez needs time back their and it starts with the O-line.
Two Weeks Ago: Mark Sanchez
3 of 4Holmes' comments towards Jets' QB Mark Sanchez after being dismantled by the Ravens, may have been the beginning of dissension. His comments toward Sanchez and the team lead to the Jets offense to have an in-house meeting.
Holmes mentioned that Sanchez needs to play better, "Mark has to do a better job of making reads and getting the ball where he needs to, so his playmakers can make plays." Holmes was stating the obvious, but he should not have gone public with that criticism of the franchise QB.
Sanchez has been struggling in this early season.
Rex Has to Manage Team Better
4 of 4This upcoming Monday Night Football game against the Dolphins is a must win. But, unfortunately, this game is no gimme. Sanchez needs all the help he can get, from the O-line, to the play-calling to the RB's. If production improves in those three, then Sanchez can improve and be more effective. And although Holmes may have been right about his criticism of his team, it should be kept in house and be addressed within the team and coaches. Or the locker room and team chemistry will spin wildly out of control.
Rex Ryan needs to keep his team under control. He and the Jets need this win against the Dolphins on Monday, or more blame will be placed, and this time it'll put Rex in the "hot-seat," alont with OC Brian Schottenheimer.
