NFL Power Rankings: Which Contenders Still Have Most Room for Improvement?

Ryan PhillipsOct 12, 2011

A good record doesn't always mean a team is actually solid. In what has been a bit of a wacky NFL season through five weeks, two contenders have emerged with excellent records, but both still have a long way to go before they prove themselves to be really dangerous.

The San Diego Chargers have opened the season at 4-1 and sit atop the AFC West entering their bye week. But while San Diego avoided its typical slow start record-wise, there is a ton of room for improvement.

The Chargers' four wins have come against teams with a combined record of 4-15. San Diego currently ranks seventh in the NFL in total yards (416.2 per game) but is scoring just 24 points per game. If that yardage doesn't start getting turned into more points, the Bolts could be in trouble against better competition.

Philip Rivers and his team need to prove they can put the ball into the end zone with more consistency, or they will end up dropping games as their schedule gets tougher.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have opened the season with a 3-2 record, but they might be the most puzzling team in the NFL right now.

The Steelers opened the year with an embarrassing 35-7 loss to the Baltimore Ravens but then blasted the Seattle Seahawks 24-0. The following week they barely snuck by the hapless Indianapolis Colts 23-20 before losing 17-10 to the Houston Texans in Week 4. Then this past weekend they blew out a seemingly solid Tennessee Titans squad 38-17.

So who are these guys really?

Well, Pittsburgh has the 12th-ranked offense in the NFL (373.6 yards per game) but is only scoring 20.4 points per game. Like the Chargers, those yards haven't necessarily equaled points for the Steelers early in the season.

Until Pittsburgh and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger prove they can score consistently, it won't matter that the team has the NFL's second-ranked defense (282.8 yards per game). The Steelers' Week 6 matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars will be a chance for them to show some consistency.
