Will Terrell Owens Comeback Be Derailed by Hospitalization, Rumored Overdose?

Ryan PhillipsOct 11, 2011

Free agent wide receiver Terrell Owens was reportedly hospitalized after police were dispatched to his home last Thursday. Rumors are circulating that the hospitalization was due to a possibly pill overdose, though that has not been confirmed.

The good news is that Owens is home safe from the hospital, the bad news is that his attempt at an NFL comeback just took a major hit.

While it was a long shot that the 37-year-old would even garner any interest from NFL teams, he at least had a chance to possibly land somewhere before this incident. But now if there wasn't already too much stink around Owens' personality and personal life, this has probably put things over the top.

In 2010, while a member of the Cincinnati Bengals, Owens had a solid 72-catch, 983-yard season in which he scored nine touchdowns. Those are solid numbers, so the fact that the Bengals showed no interest in re-signing him should be a big red flag. As with the 2009 season when he wound up in Buffalo, the Bengals were his only suitor last season.

Owens' career numbers are incredibly impressive and he should be a first-ballot Hall of Famer. He is currently sixth on the all-time receptions list (1,078), second in receiving yards (15,934) and tied for second with Randy Moss in receiving touchdowns (153).

Despite his impressive statistics, Owens is 37, coming off of ACL surgery and may have just experienced the second overdose during his professional career (he had a rather public hospitalization back in 2006). He has also been a problem in locker rooms and in the press throughout his career.

I just don't see any team out there desperate enough to risk adding Owens at this point—especially not after this latest incident.
