Fantasy Football Week 6 Waiver Wire Pickups: Locks To Lift Your Squads in Week 6

Wes ODonnellOct 11, 2011

It is five weeks into the NFL season and some of your rival owners in your fantasy league look like monsters.

And then there are some who had their one week of glory, but have fallen by the wayside at 1-4.

Either way, this is one of the most crucial weeks for player pickups.

Injuries have hit the NFL hard this year and waiver wire claims have been more important than ever.

It is absolutely crazy to say, but it is time to start making the necessary moves for a potential playoff push if you have that talent. A win this week doesn't make overcoming a 2-4 record seem so impossible. But a 1-5 record likely means you're playing spoiler.

Here are five players that you need to make room for if you want to lift your squad.

Tim Tebow, QB, Broncos

1 of 5

Look, you may not need him right now, but he's going to score touchdowns both passing and rushing.

In fact, the latter is the most likely scenario.

Somebody is going to add him just to have him in case he blows up, why not you?

The Broncos didn't look so bad with him out there against the 4-1 Chargers on Sunday, and they're going to simplify the playbook to the point where Tebow is just going to be out there reacting.

Add him, wait, and play him when the right matchup comes along.

Doug Baldwin, WR, Seahawks

2 of 5

We've been saying all year long that somebody has to catch the ball in Seattle.

Mike Williams and Sidney Rice have taken turns not being healthy; Golden Tate doesn't seem to get it, but undrafted rookie free-agent Doug Baldwin certainly does.

The Seahawks' leading receiver is still available in 92 percent of Yahoo! leagues.

He's smart, knows how to get open, flashes reliable hands and is a sleeper that can help your team throughout the rest of the year.

Victor Cruz, WR, Giants

3 of 5

For some reason Victor Cruz is still available in 38 percent of Yahoo! leagues.

If you happen to be in a league where Cruz is sitting atop the waiver wire collecting dust then you need to cash in now.

If not for his own ridiculous skill of making the tough catch and still winding up in the end zone, do it because the New York Giants couldn't run the football if they were ... oh, wait they are paid to do it and they still can't.

Pretty soon Big Blue is going to be chucking the ball all over the field.

Eli's forced throw in the red zone shows he's starting to trust Cruz and the last time Eli had a trustworthy slot/third-down receiver he completed 107 passes with him.

Steve Breaston, WR, Chiefs

4 of 5

Apparently Chiefs head coach Todd Haley now remembers that he has another reliable receiver in former Cardinal Steve Breaston.

The two were in Arizona together and now Matt Cassel is finally throwing him the football.

He's quietly been productive in the weeks leading up to Week 5 and he caught four passes for 50 yards and two touchdowns during the game.

Defenses will likely start respecting Dwayne Bowe again after his big performance this week as well, and that means Breaston should have more one-on-one opportunities on the other side.

He's still available in 83 percent of Yahoo! leagues.

Alex Smith, QB, 49ers

5 of 5

I am almost at a loss for words writing this, but Alex Smith is playing good football.

He hasn't been super productive on the stat sheet, but he's been extremely efficient and keeps getting better with each week.

The 49ers are also rediscovering their run game and this helps tremendously when Smith uses play-action.

The injury to Josh Morgan is a bit of an issue, but the 49ers love to use Vernon Davis and Frank Gore as No. 1 targets anyway.

He's still available in 84 percent of Yahoo! leagues and although he isn't going to light the world on fire, he's a safe play in a pinch or in a matchup scenario.
