NBA Power Rankings

Tanner ThomsDec 3, 2008

Over a month is in the books and the two teams in the Finals last year are taking over the league. Boston is currently riding a 10-game win streak as of Dec. 3.

Here are my Power Rankings for this week.

1. Boston Celtics (18-2)

Boston is once again the best team in the league and by far the hottest. Right now it looks as if nobody can beat them. They have one of the best starting fives in the league.

2. Los Angeles Lakers (15-2)

Los Angeles loses few games and they are far between. The Lakers are winning by nearly 13 points a game. They have shown their impressive depth.

3. Cleveland Cavaliers (15-3)

LeBron James is unstoppable and is the MVP through their 18 games. Mo Williams is a big contributor as well.

4. Orlando Magic (14-5)

Dwight Howard is a dynamic force in the middle. Although Jameer Nelson has missed games, they have managed to stay on track.

5. Portland Trail Blazers (14-6)

Greg Oden is becoming a better player game by game. Brandon Roy is one of the top guards in the game today.

6. Denver Nuggets (13-6)

The Iverson for Billups trade has sure panned out well for the Nuggets. Carmelo Anthony is handling his business, while Billups is dishing others the ball.

7. Detroit Pistons (11-6)

Detroit is still a good team filled with veterans. Allen Iverson needs to learn how to pass more often though.

8. Houston Rockets (12-7)

Houston is leading their division, but not by much. Don't expect Houston to maintain this half game lead for long. Tracy McGrady could miss three weeks.

9. Atlanta Hawks (11-6)

Joe Johnson and Josh Smith are providing this team with youth and talent. Mike Bibby is the floor general they have needed for a long time.

10. Utah Jazz (12-7)

Deron Williams is back and he was needed. Carlos Boozer is looking very impressive thus far.

11. New Orleans Hornets (10-6)

New Orleans doesn't look like the team they are expected to be. This should change soon. Their schedule is getting a bit easier.

12. Phoenix Suns (11-8)

Phoenix is on a three game losing streak, which is never good. Amare Stoudemire is unhappy with the slow tempo Terry Porter has wanted the team to take.

13. Dallas Mavericks (9-8)

Dallas is a middle of the pack team that is on and off. The key to their success is the play of Jason Terry. When he is in the zone, Dallas is tough to beat.

14. San Antonio Spurs (9-8)

What happened to the Spurs of two years ago? San Antonio has lost two straight games. Soon they will have Manu Ginobli back, which is vital to their success.

15. Miami Heat (9-9)

D-Wade has been an MVP candidate this season. Michael Beasley is also contributing in his rookie campaign.

16. New Jersey Nets (9-8)

Devin Harris is one of the more underrated players in the league. Recently, he scored a career-high 47 points.

17. Toronto Raptors (8-9)

Today, the Raptors fired coach Sam Mitchell who won coach of the year only two short years ago. Toronto has been a bit of a disappointment so far.

18. Chicago Bulls (8-11)

Derrick Rose is the rookie of the year a quarter of the way through the year. Ben Gordon leads the team in scoring once again.

19. New York Knicks (8-10)

The decent success of the Knicks has been overshadowed by Stephon Marbury, who apparently refuses to play when he's told to.

20. Philadelphia 76ers (8-11)

Elton Brand has been a smart signing so far, but other than that the team is lacking a true identity.

21. Milwaukee Bucks (8-12)

Richard Jefferson has revitalized his career with the Bucks after being an after-thought in New Jersey.

22. Charlotte Bobcats (7-11)

I'm surprised with how the Bobcats have played. Although they are four games below .500, they have made slight improvements. Good job, Larry Brown!

23. Indiana Pacers (7-11)

Indiana is one of only two teams to beat the Lakers and they did it with a buzzer-beater by Troy Murphy.

24. Golden State Warriors (5-13)

Without Baron Davis, the Warriors are awful. They have lost seven straight. That's all.

25. Memphis Grizzlies (4-14)

O.J. Mayo is already one of the better shooting guards in the Western Conference. They have tremendous upside to look forward to.

26. Minnesota Timberwolves (4-13)

Corey Brewer is out for the season. Al Jefferson is playing like an All-Star. The Wolves are young, but they still can win the occasional game.

27. Sacramento Kings (5-15)

Losers of seven straight. Sacramento has no star player on their team. Kevin Martin could be but he's very inconsistent.

28. Washington Wizards (3-13)

Gilbert Arenas said, "Perhaps it's better if we finish last." That's what they are doing in the Eastern Conference.

29. Los Angeles Clippers (3-15)

A playoff caliber team gone down the drain. Baron Davis has truly provided no real spark for a bad team.

30. Oklahoma City Thunder (2-17)

They are awful, but on the bright side Kevin Durant is back to being a shooting guard. Yes, a 6'10" shooting guard.
