Tarvaris Jackson Injury: Seahawks QB's Week 7 Status and Fantasy Value

Wes ODonnellOct 10, 2011

The Seattle Seahawks have a bye in Week 6, and this is good news for quarterback Tarvaris Jackson.

Jackson, also known as "3rd-and-Long," was injured on Sunday against the New York Giants and didn't return.

He was replaced by everybody's favorite clipboard model, Charlie Whitehurst, and the Seahawks actually held on to beat the Giants for their second win of the season.

Charlie Whitehurst is expected to start Sunday against Cleveland, according to 710Sports.com's Bill Swartz.

"

"Charlie Whitehurst appears to be Seattle's starting quarterback for Sunday's game in Cleveland. Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll gave us that indication during his visit on 97.3 KIRO FM's Seattle Morning News.

'Charlie's ready to go, and as far as I'm concerned he's starting the football game, unless something turns with Tarvaris here in the next couple days,' said Carroll.'"

It is not looking good for Tarvaris Jackson to start Sunday in Cleveland due to his pectoral injury. Charlie Whitehurst is the safe bet to start after Jackson was limited to playing catch during Thursday's practice, according to NBC's Gregg Rosenthal.

"

"The Seahawks haven’t ruled quarterbackTarvaris Jackson out for Sunday’s game in Cleveland, but Seattle’s starter is looking unlikely to play because of his pectoral injury.

Coach Pete Carroll admitted Thursday that Jackson has only “played catch” at practice this week. Charlie Whitehurst has received allthe snaps with the first team.  The team is preparing him to start."

UPDATE: Thursday, Oct. 20 at 9:00 a.m. EDT by Adam Wells

While Tarvaris Jackson is making progress in his recovery from a strained pectoral muscle, the Seattle Times reports that Charlie Whitehurst is all but guaranteed to start in Week 7 against Cleveland.

"

"Tarvaris Jackson was on the practice field Wednesday, but it was backup quarterback Charlie Whitehurst the Seahawks were preparing to start Sunday in Cleveland.

'We've got to get Charlie ready to play,' coach Pete Carroll said.

That was the strongest indication of Seattle's plans at quarterback. Jackson is recovering from a high-grade strain of his right pectoral muscle, and while he is coming back quicker than initial estimates by the Seahawks' trainers, there's no firm timeline for him to return in time for Sunday's game.

In fact, Whitehurst is expected to take the majority of the snaps with the first-unit offense this week with backup Josh Portis also getting some work."

UPDATE: Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 9:29 a.m. EST by Brandon Galvin

The Seahawks have yet to rule out Tarvaris Jackson (pectoral), who is ahead of schedule, of Week 7's contest against Cleveland, but they are preparing as if Charlie Whitehurst will be the starter, according to Seattle PI's Christian Caple

"

"The Seahawks are preparing to start Charlie Whitehurst at quarterback this week against the Cleveland Browns.

That doesn’t mean Tarvaris Jackson has been ruled out, though.

Coach Pete Carroll said Monday that Jackson is 'way ahead' of schedule after straining his pectoral against the Giants in Week 5, and that it’s still possible he could return to practice this week and play on Sunday.

Possible might not mean probable in this case, but Carroll — surprise, surprise — sounded optimistic.

'He’s able to throw the ball. He’s thrown the ball a little bit,' Carroll said. 'We’re just taking it one day at a time and see how he tolerates. He’s running out here a little bit. He’s way ahead of any schedule that anybody would have thought of at this point and we’ll just see where that takes us.'

'He has a chance, and so with that we’ll just take it day to day.'”

UPDATE: Sunday, Oct. 16 at 9:21 a.m. EST by Brandon Galvin

Tarvaris Jackson has yet to be ruled out of Week 7's clash with the Cleveland Browns, according to NBC's Mike Florio.

"

"The Seahawks are off this weekend, which is good news for quarterback Tarvaris Jackson and his injured pectoral muscle.

Whether he’ll play next Sunday, when Seattle travels to Cleveland, still isn’t known.

Per a source with knowledge of situation, the team continues to monitor the injury on a daily basis, with no decisions made yet as to whether he’ll miss any playing time.  As Week Seven approaches, the Seahawks will know more about whether Jackson can practice and, ultimately, play.

If Jackson can’t play, the Seahawks will turn to Charlie Whitehurst.  But the Seahawks remain firmly behind Jackson as their starter, even though some would argue that Whitehurst is as good, if not better."

"

Jackson shouldn't be on anybody's fantasy roster, but many owners have to wonder if their squad would be better if Whitehurst was behind center to help Marshawn Lynch, Zach Miller and Sidney Rice.

UPDATE: Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 8:30 p.m. EST by Ryan Rudnansky

After straining his pectoral muscle against the New York Giants on Sunday, Tarvaris Jackson is being held out of practice as he recovers. Per the Seattle Times' Danny O'Neil, head coach Pete Carroll said he's not ruling out Jackson playing in Week 6, but he didn't dismiss the possibility of Jackson undergoing surgery, either.

Carroll said Jackson would miss at least two practices during the Seahawks' bye week, but he hasn't provided any other details at the moment.

After Jackson was taken out of the game Sunday, backup Charlie Whitehurst went 11-of-19 for 149 yards and a touchdown in the Seahawks' 36-25 victory over the Giants.

UPDATE: Monday, Oct. 10 at 6:33 p.m. EST by Brandon Galvin

Charlie Whitehurst is expected to take first-team reps during Seattle's bye week. Tarvaris Jackson will watch as he recovers from a pectoral injury, according to Seattle Times' Danny O'Neil.

UPDATE: Monday, Oct. 10 at 6:30 p.m. EST by Brandon Galvin

Tavaris Jackson suffered a strained pectoral muscle Week 5 against the New York Giants, according to Seattle Times' Danny O'Neil.

Jackson was injured on a first-down play in the third quarter and appeared to land on his throwing shoulder.

But the shoulder was not the problem. According to Pro Football Talk, it is Jackson's pectoral muscle that was injured:

"

Per the source, early indications are that Jackson will be fine.  That said, Jackson will undergo further evaluation.

"

He was expected to undergo an MRI today.

The Seahawks were pleasantly surprised with Clipboard Whitehurst's performance on limited practice reps. However, his touchdown pass came on a busted play where the Giants actually thought the play was blown dead and didn't do anything to stop the receiver.

Seattle's bye week comes at just the right time, and the team will have have two weeks to determine what they should do for their Week 7 matchup with the Browns in Cleveland.

The defending NFC West champions don't have an overly difficult schedule following the bye week (they do still play in the NFC West), but they'll see at least seven teams currently with a .500 or better record.

As for Jackson's fantasy status, well, you were probably in deep trouble if you had to start Jackson in the first place.

He played a relatively efficient ball game until suffering the injury, but was never able to orchestrate enough points to pull ahead from a Giants team that was handing out opportunities like fliers on a street corner.

He's not a viable fantasy starter unless you're in a true bye week pinch.

His status will be monitored, and Pete Carroll will not be afraid to shake things up and give Clipboard a shot if he isn't happy with Jackson's progress.
