Week 6 Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Pickups: Darrius Heyward-Bey and 3 Key WRs

Adam WellsOct 10, 2011

While there is still one more game left in Week 5, it is never too early to start looking forward to Week 6 and the players that you can snatch off the fantasy waiver wire. At this point your roster is set, you are just looking for spare parts to plug in and hope for a big game.

There is nothing wrong with that strategy. In fact, it is the best way to guarantee yourself a championship. You have to keep your opponents from getting better, while planning for your immediate future.

One position to keep an eye on is wide receiver. There have been more than a few surprises already this season, but each week it seems like there are two more that make themselves known.

Here are three wide receivers that you need to grab on the waiver wire this week if they are still available.

Darrius Heyward-Bey, Oakland

We always knew that Darrius Heyward-Bey was talented, but now his production is starting to match the hype that made him a first-round draft pick in 2009.

Jason Campbell is beginning to trust him, which could make him a fantasy monster. He has 11 catches for 214 yards and one touchdown in his last two games.

Be careful with your expectations, though, because he has done this against New England and Houston. I think that he is becoming a better receiver, but his play the last two weeks could be aided by games against bad defenses.

Kevin Walter, Houston

An offense as dynamic as Houston's should not have many skill-position players waiting on the waiver wire. But sometimes players just get lost in the shuffle.

Kevin Walter is a matchup receiver, who can produce zero fantasy points just as easily as he can give you a double-digit point game.

If you have depth at the receiver position but need someone to fill in for a bye week, Walter is as good a choice as there is.

Michael Crabtree, San Francisco

The 49ers don't have a good offense. Alex Smith is playing well this season, but he is not throwing for the kind of yardage that you would like to see.

With Josh Morgan out for the season with a broken leg, Michael Crabtree's role in the offense is going to increase exponentially. He is not completely back from the foot injury that has hampered him all season, but if you have patience he can make you look like a genius.

Vernon Davis is the team's red zone threat, so don't count on a lot of touchdowns from Crabtree. But he should be good for six catches and 80-90 yards on a consistent week-to-week basis.
