Fantasy Football: 6 Fantasy Superstars You Can Finally Jettison
Fantasy Football is hitting its midseason stride, and by now you are realizing what works for your team.
There are some superstars who refuse to live up to their fantasy potential (here is looking at you, Chris Johnson) and others who were overrated to begin with.
Either way, as Week 5 comes to a close, it is time for fantasy owners to make tough decisions and get rid of players whose name may be worth more than their actual production.
Here are six fantasy superstars that should you should either bench or remove from your roster before Week 6.
6. Marcedes Lewis
1 of 6Marcedes Lewis is a very talented player and an elite tight end in the NFL.
The Jacksonville Jaguars are just a bad team with a tough situation at quarterback.
Whether rookie Blaine Gabbert or veteran Luke McCown has been under center, neither have been able to get the ball to the team's best pass catcher.
Lewis has only eight catches all season for 87 yards and no touchdowns.
Too many tight ends are being productive right now for fantasy owners to start Marcedes Lewis.
5. Shonn Greene
2 of 6New York Jets running back Shonn Greene is as much a fantasy victim as he is a perpetrator.
Greene has never given great reason to believe he is an elite fantasy running back, and this year he is again proving that point.
It seems every season the experts predict he will be a "sleeper" or "dark horse," and every year he is mediocre at best.
His best game so far this season came this week. He rushed for 83 yards and his second touchdown of the season.
Maybe this is a sign of things to come. If so, then I am clearly wrong to suggest he is not worth the roster spot. As it stands, I believe there are better fantasy options, especially with Greene splitting carries with LaDainian Tomlinson.
4. Chris Johnson
3 of 6What a mystery Chris Johnson has turned out to be.
His early-season woes were largely attributed to a lack of practice time because of his training-camp holdout.
Now here we are five weeks into the regular season, and Johnson still has not gotten on track.
The Tennessee Titans running back was a top five pick in most drafts, and all he has to show for it is 250 yards rushing, 116 yards receiving, and one touchdown.
Not exactly the type of numbers you expect out of your first overall selection.
There is still plenty of time left in the season, and no one would be surprised if Johnson regained the prominence of two seasons ago.
That being said, his name could provide for some serious leverage in trades, even if his productivity does not warrant it.
3. Antonio Gates
4 of 6Realistically, most fantasy owners won't cut ties with Antonio Gates.
After all, this guy has been the best fantasy tight end in the league for quite some time.
Gates is the first tight end chosen in nearly every fantasy draft and for good reason. He consistently produces at a high level.
That is, until this year. The injury bug has bitten Gates; there is no doubt about it, but even when in the starting lineup this season, there has been little chemistry with quarterback Philip Rivers.
In two games this year, Gates has only eight catches for 74 yards and zero touchdowns.
He plans to return from a foot injury on Oct. 23 against the Jets after the bye week.
Hopefully, he can return to the elite form he is capable of; if not, fantasy owners have at least a week to find a suitable replacement.
2. Chad Ochocinco
5 of 6The New England Patriots have too many weapons and are too good a team to worry about getting Chad Ochocinco the ball.
His addition to the team adds depth to the receiving corps, but he is no longer a viable fantasy option every week.
This season, he has mustered only nine catches for 136 yards total.
Tom Brady is too busy throwing the ball to Wes Welker, Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez to find time for Ochocinco.
Perhaps as the season progresses and he grows more accustomed to the offense, his numbers will increase, but I wouldn't count on it.
1. DeAngelo Williams
6 of 6DeAngelo Williams has jumped off the proverbial fantasy football cliff and he has hit the ground hard.
Remember the 2008 version of Williams? The fantasy football beast who produced 1,500 yards and 18 touchdowns? Well, he is gone.
In his place is the 2011 edition. Williams has 258 rushing yards and one touchdown this season.
Yes, he splits carries with Jonathan Stewart, but neither has produced when given the ball.
Williams' Week 5 game against the New Orleans Saints was decent as he gained 115 yards on the ground, but most of that yardage came on a single 69-yard scamper, and Williams still only had nine carries.
With the Cam Newton aerial assault now in full effect in Carolina, it is time to get rid of Williams if you haven't already.
