NBA Lockout: How David Stern Could Fix the League by Tomorrow

Joe BarnathanOct 7, 2011

If you're like me, you've become annoyed with the way this lockout has been handled.

Frankly, you're mad that there was a lockout at all. But, unfortunately, here we are, just days away from losing the first games of the season. And there's very little we can do about it.

However, there is one man at the top who could fix this entire debacle with one simple move. All he needs to do is look to Europe. Or NASCAR.

That's right sports fans, the way of the future is advertising.

Not just the little logos around a stadium, or commercials between games, but actual advertising on our athlete's sports apparel.

While American sports (with the exception of NASCAR) have held out against advertising on jerseys, European soccer teams have been doing this for years. And they make plenty of extra money doing it, too. According to the London Times, in 2009, American company Aon inked a deal with Manchester United for four years, $124 million (£80 Million).

Of course, some fans may be hesitant to allow this kind of advertising to come to a sport like basketball, but just think how much money a sponsor would pay to get their name on the jersey of the Lakers, Knicks, Celtics, Bulls or Heat.

And while some may argue that this would only help the top teams, perhaps Stern could make this the main part of his proposed revenue sharing. It's no secret that some owners don't want to partake in revenue sharing, but what if it was new revenue coming in that would almost certainly help save the league?

What do you think, fans?

Should we sacrifice certain traditions in the game in order to ensure that the league doesn't lose any games?

If I were David Stern, I would take a long hard look at this option.

Would you?
