Fantasy Football Winners and Losers, Week 4: The Quarterbacks
Week 4 of the NFL season gave us a lot of thrills, and a lot of opportunities to sit back and just shake our heads.
The quarterbacks in particular were a sight to see.
Thus far, the 2011 season has been the year of the quarterback—balls are flying through the air like we're trying to go back to the moon.
In Week 4 alone, NFL quarterbacks combined for 7,886 yards through the air, which is good for second best in league history.
As we all know, stats translate to fantasy success.
So, did your quarterback put up the big numbers last week? Find out in this week's fantasy football winners and losers, QB edition.
Winner: Aaron Rodgers
1 of 8Aaron Rodgers put on such a show on Sunday that Broadway is currently trying to buy the rights for the remake.
I mean, come on, the guy was absolutely unstoppable.
In a game all about statistics, Rodgers didn't disappoint.
He threw for a career-high 408 yards and totaled six touchdowns—four through the air and two more on the ground (by the way, if you're wondering, the six touchdowns isn't a typo).
Rodgers is the early favorite for NFL MVP and he shows no signs of stopping.
Loser: Mark Sanchez
2 of 8If Aaron Rodgers was the best quarterback performance of Week 4, then Mark Sanchez was certainly the worst.
To Sanchez's credit, the entire Jets team was bad. However, that doesn't change the fact that Mark was extraordinarily horrendous.
Sanchez threw for a whopping 119 yards and a giant goose egg in the touchdowns column.
That said, Sanchez wasn't short of gaudy numbers in the turnover department—tossing an interception and fumbling the ball three times.
The Jets and Mark Sanchez definitely lost this past weekend.
Winner: Cam Newton
3 of 8Cam Newton has been the far-and-away early-season favorite for Rookie of the Year. On Sunday, he again showed us why.
Newton was able to have his way with Chicago's defense, totaling 410 yards from scrimmage.
Of those 410 yards, 374 of them were through the air. He added a passing touchdown and two rushing touchdowns to go along with it.
Newton has taken the NFL by storm and even though his team didn't win, Killer Cam was definitely a fantasy winner.
Loser: Ben Roethlisberger
4 of 8Big Ben's stats in the early season have been anything but big, and it's frustrating fantasy owners everywhere.
Ben didn't improve at all in Week 4, either, by throwing for 206 yards and no touchdowns. He added an interception in the process.
He can't get any protection from his offensive line causing his completion percentage to become more and more depleted by the week.
To make matters worse, Ben sprained his foot in the game against the Texans, making him uncertain for Week 5's game vs. Tennessee.
Winner: Michael Vick
5 of 8The Philadelphia Eagles struggled and lost against the upstart 49ers in Week 4 despite a valiant effort from Michael Vick.
Vick threw for a career-high 416 yards, added two touchdowns and in classic Vick fashion, had 75 more yards on the ground.
He was surely a fantasy winner.
What was more impressive to me was that he pulled off all these numbers in what was a huge bounce-back game after suffering a hand injury against the Giants.
Loser: Jay Cutler
6 of 8Jay Cutler's lack of production in Week 4 was a product of Mike Martz's petty attempt to become a fan favorite in Chicago.
While the Bears had a great game on the ground, they only threw the ball 17 times. Cutler only completed nine of those attempts.
He didn't throw a touchdown, but had a bad overthrow for an interception.
We'll see if the Bears balance their attack more against the Lions, but in Week 4, Cutler and Martz sure did make fantasy owners angry.
Winner: Matt Hasselbeck
7 of 8In my eyes, Matt Hasselbeck is always #winning (common Twitter term).
I mean, I just love the way the guy always plays the game, and at 36 he just seems to keep going.
In Week 4, Hasselbeck only completed 10 passes—three of which were touchdowns—and that's why he's a winner this week.
Hasselbeck is efficient, has been his entire career. He's the reason that Tennessee has turned a lot of heads early on this season.
Loser: Joe Flacco
8 of 8Joe Flacco followed up his career day against St. Louis with one he'll surely want to erase against the Jets—on Sunday Night Football of all places.
Both quarterbacks looked like rookies in their first career starts. It was painful to watch.
At one point in the night Flacco had 13 consecutive incompletions. I mean, really now, unlucky No. 13.
Flacco finished the night with only 163 yards and two turnovers.
He did absolutely nothing for his fantasy owners.
