Tony Romo: Deion Sanders Won't Be Last Franchise Legend to Blast Choke Artist

Kyle VassaloOct 4, 2011

Deion Sanders came out and said what everyone else is thinking. Tony Romo isn't the quarterback who can bring the Cowboys another Lombardi Trophy.

Sanders, who lives in Dallas, had this to say about Romo following his epic collapse against the Lions,

"

“I don’t understand this guy. Just when you want to believe in him, heroic effort, came back against San Francisco, they said punctured lung and everything. And we praised him, we said, ‘Yeah, he’s that leader, he’s their guy.’ And then you come and do this. What are you thinking? Sooner or later we’ve just got to quit guessing and assuming that this guy’s is the guy to get you over the hump, and say, ‘You know what? This guy is always going to be great statistically, but he’s not that guy that can take you to where you want to go.’ And that’s the Super Bowl."

Primetime wasn't the first Cowboys legend to come out and say Romo is the problem and he certainly won't be the last. With the team, fans and former players tired of Romo's inconsistencies and inadequacies in clutch situations, Jerry Jones has to take the griping to heart at some point.

Jones isn't isolated from the world. He's an owner who is in the loop and wants to win. He's made the Cowboys his life and if someone can convince him that Romo isn't the answer, Jones isn't going to hesitate to go another direction.

While he would like to see Romo succeed, him proving again and again that he can't get it done when it matters most is downright alarming. At some point he's got to start thinking that Emmitt Smith and Sanders are right.

Romo has the numbers. As far as fantasy football is concerned, you are golden with him under center. Unfortunately, numbers aren't everything. He checks out when his team needs him the most and comes up big when it doesn't matter.

Heroes aren't made in Week 2, the first quarter or in fantasy football. Romo lacks the leadership qualities necessary to be the man under center for the Dallas Cowboys. While Jones has been patient and optimistic throughout Romo's career, his patience has to be wearing thin.

More who want the organization to return to its former glory are going to come out and criticize Romo. Putting Romo on blast is going to be as trendy as Pokemon in the '90s. It's easy to feel bad for Romo, but he's a liability at this point.

It becomes more and more clear every week that the team needs to go in a different direction. Romo showed in his Week 4 collapse that no matter what heroics he puts on display, he'll always return to his role as the goat at some point.
