Roy Williams Injury: Is Replacement Johnny Knox a Viable Fantasy Starter?

Ryan AlfieriOct 2, 2011

Now that Roy Williams is out of the picture, you would think that his replacement, Johnny Knox, would get a huge boost in fantasy numbers, right?

While Knox's stock may rise, I would be wary of starting any Bears for the foreseeable future. They simply have no stability on offense, their offensive line has still not improved from last year and they are not even trying to keep defenses honest by running the ball.

With all of the criticism Mike Martz has taken over the past week, one has to think that Martz will make some adjustments in his absurdly pass-heavy offense. This can be a double-edged sword for fantasy owners, as even though the Bears offense may improve from a game plan overhaul, it will also lead to less pass attempts and targets for Knox.

The Bears will also have to deal with defensive end Charles Johnson, which could be problematic for a terrible offensive line in Chicago. If Cutler does not have to to let Knox get open, either Martz will have to call shorter passes or the Bears are just going to struggle.

Simply put, there are a lot of question marks surrounding the Bears offense right now, and I would advise to let someone else take a chance on Knox if you have at least someone serviceable on your roster.

If you are desperate for a receiver, however, Knox has to be worth a look. No matter what Martz does with his offense, Knox is back to being the Bears' top pass catcher no matter which way you put it. If nothing else, he is worth it as a third receiver or even as a flex player.
