Sacramento Kings: AEG Offers Fans Hope To Keep Kings in Sacramento
Kevin Johnson and city officials are hoping that the Think Big Sacramento initiative can save the Kings from departing towards Anaheim. There is nobody bigger than AEG, a company that can actually salvage the Sacramento Kings.
NBC Sports reports AEG has acknowledged an interest in lending a hand to the committee of the Think Big Sacramento initiative, a group committed to keeping the Kings in the state's capital.
Anschutz Entertainment Group stated they may be interested in offering assistance to the city in the form of tens of millions of dollars.
They would receive a profit on the returns of any establishment built to house the Kings and surrounding businesses.
This is the first time in months that a positive sign has been lifted for Kings fans to corral around. The money-starved city seemed almost resigned to the fact that the Maloofs were going to pack their bags and head to Anaheim.
The city now has until December 30th to decide if they will go ahead with a funding proposition that would secure a new arena for their NBA team.
The city council will be asked to vote on Tuesday whether to continue the arduous journey of keeping the Kings. The report states Tuesday's vote will determine "a $550,000 request for lawyers and consultants to be used to officially vet the project...The city council will also be asked to vote whether to give the ICON-David Taylor Group the authority to start negotiating on behalf of the city with operators."
Those in Los Angeles would give the AEG partnership a pat on the back for the job that has been done to revitalize a downtrodden downtown area.
Not only do the Lakers have a beautiful and luxurious new home that is prized by fans, the immediate area is bustling with traffic due to concerts and sporting events all year long.
The hope is to create a mini-LA Live for the city of Sacramento. The hope is that AEG is not in the business of losing ventures.
Sacramento can still pack them in, and surrounding bars and restaurants would offer a waterhole for the fans to gather all year long.
It has been a trying year for Kings fans. The assumption was that the end was near. Finally, there is hope that the Kings will again play their games to great applause in the city of Sacramento.
