Kenny Britt Injury: How Tennessee Titans Can Recover
The Tennessee Titans have lost their best receiver in Kenny Britt to injury. How can they recover?
Britt was injured in Sunday’s matchup between the Tennessee Titans and the Denver Broncos, sporting what appeared to be a serious knee injury that could keep him out for the rest of the season. It’s a big loss considering that Britt has 271 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
But not all is lost for this 2-1 Tennessee Titans team. Here are some ways they can recover from this massive injury.
Get Other Receivers Involved More
1 of 5Britt is a star, and fans always latch onto stars. But often times those stars make a team a bit unbalanced, when they could actually be better if they’d spread the ball around some.
Tennessee could use some balance in the receiving corps. Nate Washington is the No. 2 receiver for the Titans, with 13 catches for 166 yards in three games so far this season. Not a bad showing, but he’ll have to get even more involved in order to help fill Britt’s shoes.
After that, the receiving situation gets grimmer. No one other than Britt and Washington has made more than three catches (other than Chris Johnson, who had averaged a lousy 4.1 yards per catch in the first two weeks of the season).
The Titans have to spread around the ball to make up for Britt’s absence.
Get Chris Johnson Going
2 of 5The player formerly known as Chris Johnson might as well still be holding out.
He did do some good things against the Denver Broncos’ below-average defense (54 receiving yards) to save his fantasy owners. Now he needs to help save his team.
Going into Sunday, Johnson had averaged less than 2.5 yards per carry. That simply isn’t good enough for a guy who held out for top running back money. The Titans must get him back to his old form, or they may lose their season.
Rely on the Veteran Signal-Caller
3 of 5Matt Hasselbeck isn’t a Pro Bowl-caliber quarterback anymore. Or at least I thought he wasn’t.
The veteran quarterback put up over 600 yards in his first two games and followed them up in Week 3 with a 311-yard performances. This guy can still play the game.
Pete Carroll is kicking himself right now.
Hasselbeck is reinvigorated by his new environment and has the experience and resume to lead this team. The Titans must let him be that guy. He’s the only person who can.
Continue to Play Solid Defense
4 of 5Ultimately, stats such as yardage and first downs really don’t matter defensively. All that matters is the score board. The Titans have given up 16, 13 and 14 in their three games so far this season. That’s about as good as anybody.
If Matt Hasselbeck can keep being himself a decade ago and Chris Johnson decides to come back to Earth anytime soon, they’ll be backed up by a defense that knows how to keep people out of the endzone.
They’ll need that kind of defense to win without their best playmaker in Britt.
Shorten Games
5 of 5This is a bit related to getting Chris Johnson going. The Tennessee Titans must shorten football games. They don’t want to get into long, drawn out shootouts with anyone because they’ll have a tough time competing without their best pass-catcher.
They need to run the ball and throw high-completion rate passes in order to keep the clock moving and suck teams in.
Doing so will remove the need for big plays on the offensive side of the ball and allow their defense to be well-rested each time it steps on to the field.
