Metta World Peace: Ron Artest Disappoints with Weak DWTS Premiere
Ron Artest, who now wishes to be called Metta World Peace, kicked off the 13th season of Dancing With The Stars, and he let down athletes everywhere.
An athlete has won the competition six times, and five athletes have finished second or third. With World Peace's sorry performance to start the show, it now appears that if an athlete will win the show, it's going to be soccer star Hope Solo.
The fact that World Peace was the first dancer didn't bode well for his future on the show. Since it was the premiere, the show is likely to get more viewers right when it starts just to see how this year's cast looks.
When the first dancer is downright awful and scores a 14 out of 30, the lowest of the night, it doesn't look good for the show or the dancer.
World Peace has the right attitude for the show, as he is a true competitor, but to succeed in this competition he has to be able to dance well week in and week out.
Unfortunately, that isn't going to happen for the LA Lakers star. The judges informed him that while his cha-cha-cha was somewhat entertaining, it lacked a great deal of technique.
Dancing is not easy to just pick up out of the blue, so it's OK if someone on the show struggles at the beginning.
However, as an athlete, World Peace as expectations to live up to, and he failed to do so in the first show.
I applaud him for thinking that his score should have been lower because it shows that his mind is in the right place for this competition.
As a great lockdown defender in the NBA, World Peace wants to win in everything he does, but after a poor showing to open the show, he'll be lucky to stay on Dancing With The Stars longer than a few weeks.
World Peace needed to come out with a bang and set the bar high, but showed the rest of the cast what not to do, and for that, he will struggle to get votes and stay in the competition.
He has a lot of work to do, and while I don't think he'll be the first one gone, I don't see him representing the athletes very well.
