Why Scolari Should Forget Robinho

TheChelseaBlog.orgNov 19, 2008

I was reading a couple of articles about Robinho recently and despite initially feeling a bit sorry for him, what with ending up at Man City and all, I read a few things that have made me think that maybe he deserves everything he gets.

Remember deadline day? Remember how City were trying to throw silly money at Dimitar Berbatov in an effort to nick him off Manchester United probably right up until he put pen to paper? And remember how the Bulgarian didn’t even give them the time of day, such was his desire to play for United?

Bearing in mind Berbatov ultimately got the move he asked for, despite Spurs wanting to sell him to anyone but Sir Alex Ferguson & co, why didn’t Robinho do the same thing with Chelsea? After all, hadn’t he stated his intention to the world’s press to play for Chelsea right before he headed for Eastlands? I know there were rumours afterwards of his agent selling him out to the higher bidder – quickly followed by his sacking – but surely Robinho can read a contract? If he didn’t want to play for City he could have called Real’s bluff in much the same way Berbatov had at Spurs.

Then again, Robinho was only at City for five minutes before he started spouting rubbish about Chelsea, so why am I even questioning this now? Well, take a look at City’s position in the table and tell me Robinho still thinks he made the right decision. There might be a rather large gap between City’s new wealth and Abramovich’s now meagre bank balance but it’s nothing compared to the widening expanse between them and us in the Premier League.

Surely the Brazilian can’t be happy with that? Well if he’s not, he isn’t about to let on because with rumours still circling about Scolari’s interest in him and even suggestions of a cheeky bid in January, Robinho knocks this right on the head saying “I hope to play here for many years. I hope to make history at this club and become one of the great heroes at Manchester City. I’m enjoying it here, and my aim is to become the best player in the world. I hope I can do that here.”

I mean, seriously, has he been drug screened lately?
