Randy Moss: Will the New England Patriots Bring Moss out of Retirement?

Kyle VassaloJun 4, 2018

Randy Moss appears to be waiting for a phone call from New England to pull him out of retirement. This is a team where he resurrected his career, the only logical place where it seems Moss could be a real asset. Unfortunately for Moss, that call isn't coming.

Bill Belichick's moves don't make sense until months, sometimes years later. Shipping off Deion Branch years ago, instilling faith in guys like Danny Woodhead, cutting Brandon Meriweather and most notably every move he made with Moss, have all been questionable decisions at the time that turned out to be brilliant.

Moss was brought into Foxboro initially as a high-risk, seemingly low-reward player. Obviously this was a guy who had all the makings of being one of the best players to ever play the game, but a stint in Oakland made his Hall of Fame candidacy seem impossible.

Belichick gambled and won. He struck gold with Moss, who resurrected his career and became an elite wide receiver once again. It came as a shock when the Patriots proceeded to deal him away to the Vikings at a time when he was Tom Brady's go-to guy.

Brady recently told the Boston Herald that he loves Randy Moss and would welcome him back to the Patriots. Brady acknowledges that he doesn't make personnel decisions though. It's impossible to understand Belichick's train of thought, but Brady, along with everyone else on the Patriots has undying faith in Belichick's moves and non-moves, however unpopular they may be.

The Patriots already have their veteran No. 1 receiver quota taken care of in Chad Ochocinco, who embodies everything the Patriots love and hate. Unlike Moss, Ochocinco is a class act. Showy, demonstrative, obnoxious to some, but he doesn't have Moss' off-the-field issues and coming to play on game day has never been an issue.

As for the poor character quota? Albert Haynesworth has that on lock. Two guys who "play when they want to play" in the locker room might be too much for the Patriots to handle.

The team dominated last year without Moss. They brought in risky pieces—including one at receiver—they think can help them make a deeper run in the playoffs.

In the end, it doesn't matter how much Brady and Pats fans love Moss or how much Moss would love to take his cleats off the shelf and hit the field. Belichick would have already reached out to Moss if this deal was going to happen.

The first game is two days away. If he was ever going to make the move, it would have already happened.
