Top 15 Coaches Who Produce One-and-Done Talent
Since the NBA established the one-and-done rule for the 2006-07 season, the layout of college basketball has changed. Coaches must deal with players who might only stay one year now more than ever.
Some coaches like John Calipari have made their teams incredibly strong by recruiting one-and-done players, while others like Thad Matta have been hurt by the rule.
There are opposing viewpoints when it comes to the one-and-done rule, and it is a very heated argument. Some proclaim that the rule is a "necessary evil," and it benefits both the NBA and college basketball.
However, there is a case to be made to get rid of the rule in the new CBA, and college coaches are against it, including Duke's Mike Krzyzewski and Kentucky's Calipari.
Krzyzewski has said that "College basketball should be more than an extended-stay motel," and Calipari has said, "Sometimes I don't think people will listen when I say this, I don't like the rule. I don't like the one-and-done. I don't think it's good for college, I don't think it's good for the NBA."
While the debate about the rule rages on, the fact is that until a new NBA CBA is agreed upon that changes the rule, college coaches have to deal with it.
Coaches like Krzyzewski and Calipari have used the rule to their advantage by recruiting one-and-done talent. These two coaches along with 13 others have proven that they can work with the one-and-done rule, and they are the best at recruiting and sending one-and-done talent.
15. Sidney Lowe
1 of 15Sidney Lowe used to be the head coach of the North Carolina State Wolfpack, but he was recently fired. Of about 20 coaches to have coached one-and-done players, Lowe is one of several to have only coached one such player.
Lowe coached J.J. Hickson, who went No. 19 overall to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2008 NBA Draft. He also had C.J. Leslie this season, which was his last. Leslie easily could have gone pro, but decided to return to school.
Lowe could have had two one-and-done players in four years, but Leslie returned, and now he does not have much of a chance to getting anymore.
14. Kelvin Sampson
2 of 15Kelvin Sampson was the coach of the Indiana Hoosiers until he was fired. He also produced one one-and-done player during his time as a head coach in college basketball.
Eric Gordon was a freshman shooting guard who was drafted No. 7 overall in the 2008 draft, He was the fifth freshman taken because he was overshadowed by Derrick Rose, Michael Beasley, O.J. Mayo and Kevin Love, who were taken No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, and No. 5 respectively.
Gordon averaged 21 points, three rebounds and two assists per game in his only season, winning the Big Ten Rookie of the Year Award, and being elected to the Big Ten First Team.
Sampson recruited his only one-and-done before being fired, and Gordon was one of the best one-and-dones we have ever witnessed.
13. Bruce Pearl
3 of 15Bruce Pearl used to be the head coach at Tennessee... used to be. Pearl was recently fired after a good run with the Volunteers.
Pearl coached a single one-and-done player as well. He was lucky enough to land Tobias Harris in recruiting, and coach him for the 2010-11 season. Harris was drafted No. 17 by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2011 NBA Draft, leaving Tennessee at around the same time as Bruce Pearl.
Pearl is looking to get back into coaching, recruiting and landing more top prospects, some of which will undoubtedly be one-and-dones, and he has a good chance of being able to do so soon.
12. Jim Boeheim, Syracuse
4 of 15Jim Boeheim is the head coach of the Syracuse Orange, and he is yet another coach who has only had one one-and-done player.
Donte Greene was Boeheim's one-and-done. He went to the Memphis Grizzlies at No. 28 overall. The 6'9" small forward was not a big-name NBA player, but he was a one-and-done recruited by Boeheim.
Boeheim could could have another one-and-done on the way with Rakeem Christmas coming to join the program this season.
11. Mike Krzyzewski, Duke
5 of 15Mike Krzyzewski is the head coach of the Duke Blue Devils. Krzyzewski has had only one-and-done so far, but he was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft.
Kyrie Irving is Krzyzewski's one-and-done since 2006. Irving did not play for the majority of his only college basketball season due to a toe injury, but he was still the first pick in this year's NBA Draft.
Krzyzewski was not done, however, and he has recruited Austin Rivers, son of Boston Celtics' coach Doc Rivers. Austin is the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2011 class, and he is bound to be a one-and-done player.
Krzyzewski is getting more one-and-dones, and he could be going for another one or two in the 2012 class.
10. Jeff Capel
6 of 15Jeff Capel used to be the head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners, but he is now an assistant coach for the Duke Blue Devils, and appears ready to replace Mike Krzyzewski, who you have already seen on this list.
Capel recruited and developed one one-and-done player: Tiny Gallon, who went No. 47 overall in the 2010 NBA Draft.
Gallon was a 296-pound power forward who had a great year in college and was the first pick in the second round.
Capel won't have another chance to recruit one-and-dones to call his own for a few more years, but if he takes over at Duke (which we all expect), then he will not only have the chance, but he will be backed by a very prestigious school.
9. Bill Self, Kansas
7 of 15Bill Self is the head coach of the Kansas Jayhawks, and he has had two one-and-dones. Self has had a good run at Kansas in keeping players, but he has had two one-and-dones in the past two years.
Xavier Henry and Josh Selby were his one-and-dones, with Henry going No. 15 overall, and Selby going No. 49.
Self has had a few good one-and-dones, and he could be looking for more, with five of his targets being in the top 25 in the nation.
Self could land himself a few more one-and-dones over the next few years due to his knack for producing them over the past couple of years.
8. Tim Floyd
8 of 15Tim Floyd used to be the head coach for the USC Trojans, and he recruited two one-and-dones during his time.
Floyd recruited O.J. Mayo, who gave us one of the best one-and-done years we have ever seen, posting 21 points, 4.5 boards and 3.0 assists per game. Mayo was a great guard, and Floyd gave his job for him, resigning because of the way he was treated due to the impropriety surrounding Mayo's recruiting.
Floyd also recruited DeMar DeRozen, who was a shooting guard who went No. 9 overall to the Toronto Raptors.
Floyd could definitely produce great one-and-done players, but losing his job for it hurt his reputation and positioning on this list.
7. Frank Martin, Kansas State
9 of 15Frank Martin is the head coach of the Kansas State Wildcats, and he has produced two one-and-done players.
Martin's one-and-dones both went to the 2008 NBA Draft, with Bill Walker going No. 47 overall to the Washington Wizards, and Michael Beasley going No. 2 overall to the Miami Heat.
Martin's crowning-jewel was Beasley, who averaged 26.2 points and 12.4 rebounds per game, and he recorded a freshman-record 28 double-doubles. Beasley won the Big 12 Player of the Year Award, was an All-American and won the National Rookie of the Year Award.
Martin knows how to land one-and-dones and make them even better, even if he hasn't done so in recent years.
6. Ben Howland, UCLA
10 of 15Ben Howland is the head coach of the UCLA Bruins, and he has had two one-and-done players of his own.
Howland first had Kevin Love, the No. 5 overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. Love averaged 17.5 points and 10.6 rebounds per game. Love was a first-team All-American, and won the Pac-10 Freshman and Player of the Year awards.
Howland then had Jrue Holliday who was selected No. 17 overall in the 2009 NBA Draft. Holliday showed us that Howland likes his one-and-dones, and he is looking to regain his prowess as a great one-and-done producer.
5. Paul Hewitt, George Mason
11 of 15Paul Hewitt was the head coach for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, but he was fired. During that time, however, Hewitt recruited three one-and-done players in a few short years.
All three of Hewitt's one-and-dones have been taken in the top 20 of their respective NBA Drafts, with Thaddeus Young being drafted No. 12 and Javaris Crittenton going No. 19 in the 2007 NBA Draft, and Derrick Favors going No. 3 in the 2010 NBA Draft.
Hewitt has landed one-and-dones for a few years, but he was fired by Georgia Tech, and will have to try to do so for George Mason in the 2012 class.
4. Roy Williams, North Carolina
12 of 15Roy Williams is the head coach for the North Carolina Tar Heels, and unlike so many other coaches on this list, he still has a job. Williams has only produced one one-and-done player, but he is bound to get a few more, and he could have had a few others.
Williams produced Brandan Wirght, who went No. 8 overall to the Charlotte Bobcats in the 2007 NBA Draft. Wright's line was: 14.7 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.8 block, 1.0 steal per game.
Williams recruits well, however, recruiting Harrison Barnes, who could have been a one-and-done. This season, Williams landed James McAdoo, a guaranteed one-and-done, and P.J. Hairston, who has the best shot in the class and could be a one-and-done.
Williams is getting better at recruiting big-name players, but that will result in more one-and-dones in the next few years.
3. Rick Barnes, Texas
13 of 15Rick Barnes is the head coach of the Texas Longhorns, and he has had four one-and-dones in his time with the Longhorns.
Barnes has coached Tristan Thompson, Cory Joseph, Avery Bradley and Kevin Durant since 2007, with three coming in the last two seasons.
Thompson and Joseph were drafted this season, with Thompson going No. 4 overall and Durant going No. 2 overall behind Greg Oden.
Durant had arguably the best single-season for any one-and-done we have ever seen, averaging 25.8 points and 11.1 rebounds per game during the regular season, including 28.9 points and 12.5 rebounds during conference play.
Durant was easily the most decorated freshman, winning the following awards: ESPN All-American, ESPN Player of the Year, AP First Team All-American (unanimous), John R. Wooden Award, NABC Division I Player of the Year, Naismith Player of the Year, AP National Player of the Year, and ESPY Award College Athlete of the Year.
Barnes is bringing in more talented players and making them one-and-dones, and he is the third best coach at doing so.
2. Thad Matta, Ohio State
14 of 15Thad Matta is the head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes, and even with Jared Sullinger deciding to return to school instead of becoming a 2011 lottery pick, he has had five one-and-dones.
Matta had Greg Oden, Mike Conley Jr. and Daequan Cook in 2007, all of whom decided to go to the NBA that season after a title game run in the NCAA tournament. He then had Kosta Koufos in 2008 and B.J. Mullens in 2009.
Matta has had a variety of one-and-dones, with Oden being the No. 1 overall pick, and Koufos and Mullens having somewhat disappointing years for one-and-dones. Matta has coached his players into being one-and-done, and he could have had a sixth this year, but Sulinger stayed in school.
1. John Calipari, Kentucky
15 of 15John Calipari is currently the head coach of the Kentucky Wildcats, and he has had eight one-and-done players in the last five seasons. He started with the Memphis Tigers, but he joined the Kentucky Wildcats for the 2009-10 season.
Calipari had three one-and-dones (Derrick Rose, Tyreke Evans and Shawne Williams) with the Tigers before leaving for the Kentucky.
He then had five with the Wildcats, with John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Eric Bledsoe and Daniel Orton going in the 2010 draft, and Enes Kanter and Brandon Knight going in the 2011 draft.
Calipari has had a knack for recruiting top prospects and turning them into one-and-done players, despite proclaiming that he is against the one-and-done rule. He is the best at using it to his advantage, and we now expect to see at least a few one-and-dones at each John Calipari program every season.
