5 Things Chad Henne Needs to Do This Preseason to Win Back Miami Dolphins Fans

John RozumJun 7, 2018

There's more than one acceptable reason as to why the Miami Dolphins still have Chad Henne under center.

One of them is that the coaching staff believes in his ability.

Now, whether Dolphin fans choose to believe that, well, that's just the reality of the situation.

In any event, he's your QB Miami, and you're stuck with him for the immediate future.

Therefore, here's for your sake that he'll make the best of it.

Which in turn, how Henne can win you back.

Don't Try to Do Too Much

1 of 5

This year, Chad Henne has some new weapons around him in RBs Reggie Bush and rookie Daniel Thomas from Kansas State.

In addition, WR Brandon Marshall and TE Anthony Fasano remain, while there's also Davone Bess and Brian Hartline as part of the receiving core.

The weapons are there for him to play with, and he should have no excuse to leave the pocket as O-linemen Jake Long (currently on the PUP list), Richie Incognito, rookie Mike Pouncey from Florida, and recently-signed Marc Colombo from Dallas are protecting him.

If he tries to do too much, it's his own fault.

Trust the Offensive Line More Than Ever

Although Miami's best player Jake Long is on the PUP list, chances are he'll be ready to go for the regular season opener on Sept. 12.

That being said, Henne does sometimes not have enough trust in his offensive line, as he gets rid of the ball too early or doesn't stay in the pocket long enough.

Obviously at Michigan, Long was really all he had legitimately blocking for him, but now with Florida rookie Mike Pouncey, Richie Incognito, and signed from Dallas, tackle Marc Colombo, he has no reason to leave the pocket.

In addition, he does try to take off running more than he should, and the problem is, he's not a scrambling QB.

He's bigger and stronger than most QBs, so he shouldn't have to worry about getting de-cleated.

Trust your O-line and the rest of the fans will follow, otherwise, why be a QB?

Allow His Playmakers to Shine

One big reason why Brandon Marshall wanted out of Denver, was because he wasn't given the freedom to really take over a game.

Thus far in Miami, the problem has been Henne simply just not getting the job done.

Now that he has RB Reggie Bush behind him, there's no reason as to why he can't just manage a game, and allow his teammates to dominate.

Part of this is ego, and although it may not appear that way with Chad, he was in the spotlight at Michigan (other than Jake Long), so handing it to Marshall and Bush better occur.

Otherwise, the proverbial crap is going to hit the proverbial fan.

Get the Play Action Working

4 of 5

Here's where Miami can really be dangerous this season.

The offensive line is basically complete with studs across the board, and therefore Reggie Bush or rookie Daniel Thomas should have no problem pounding the rock inside and out.

This in turn, beautifully sets up the play-action pass.

Think about it, Dolphin fans.

Brandon Marshall slicing down field on a double move to the goal post, while Henne fakes, and then turns around to see him flying down the field.

Then, Chad cocks his arm back and lets one soar through the air like a he's launching a Vortex football (those who grew up in the 1990s know what I'm talking about).

However, this can only happen if Henne really emphasizes that fake hand-off.

It's the little details that he must work on to be successful, because the arm strength is already there.

Win Games

5 of 5

This is what it all comes down to.

Winning football games.

Now, the 2011 schedule for Miami is fairly difficult, but the only way Chad can ultimately win the folks of South Florida over, is to win. Period.

Through 29 game appearances the past two season, he's thrown 27 TDs to 33 picks.

However, he's averaged almost 3,100 yards passing per year.

Problem is, his record is only 13-14 as a starter.

As Vince Lombardi once said, "Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing."
