NFL Free Agency: Eight Possible Landing Spots for Nnamdi Asomugha

Tony SantorsaJun 23, 2011

Oakland Raiders free agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha is arguably the most wanted free agent available, and once free agency begins, Asomugha and his agent are going to be receiving a plethora of phone calls.

Asomugha is one of the league's top shut-down cornerbacks, right up there with New York Jets' Darrelle Revis, and he's set to be one rich man.

According to multiple sources, the NFL lockout may have two weeks to go once a new deal is agreed upon, and then free agency will start.

Here are eight possible landing spots for Nnamdi Asomugha.

Houston Texans

1 of 8

The Houston Texans are on the verge of being a very dangerous playoff team, and the addition of Nnamdi Asomugha would put the them over the top.

Former Dallas Cowboys head coach and now Texans' first-year defensive coordinator, Wade Phillips, will be installing his 3-4 defensive system in Houston with hopes of a much-improved 2011 season.

Houston ranked dead last in pass defense, as they allowed 267.5 passing yards per-game, and without a doubt, a shut-down cornerback of the caliber of Asomugha would certainly turn their secondary around.

Detroit Lions

2 of 8

Slowly but surely, the Detroit Lions are turning into a solid defensive football team—but their secondary is an obvious need, as its their downfall.

The Lions are set up to have one of the best pass rushing defensive lines with Nick Fairley, Kyle Vanden Bosch and Ndamukong Suh—just imagine what a shut-down cornerback like Nnamdi Asomugha would do for their defense.

Detroit has been not afraid to pay free agents, with the signings of Vanden Bosch and Nate Burleson, so don't count the Lions out, according to The Oakland Press.

New York Jets

3 of 8

Darrelle Revis and Nnamdi Asomugha—how devastating would that be? Quite frankly, if I were an offensive coordinator, I'd try to run the ball nearly every play.

Believe it or not, this could very well happen, according to Tim Graham of ESPN.

According to the report, Asomugha has been in talks with Jets' head coach Rex Ryan and Revis—and Graham described Asomugha as being "dead serious."

Asomugha and Revis are arguably the top two best shut-down cornerbacks in the league, and a combination of the two would be lethal.

Washington Redskins

4 of 8

We all know that Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder loves to spend money on big-name players—i.e., Donovan McNabb and Albert Haynesworth—and it wouldn't be a surprise of the 'Skins offered Nnamdi Asomugha a huge contract.

Washington may not be an appealing destination for Asomugha, as they're projecting to be a bottom-of-the-league team. However, head coach Mike Shanahan is still putting his fingerprint on his ball club and it should be competitive in a few seasons.

If Asomugha wants the money, I'm sure that Snyder and the 'Skins will give it to him.

New England Patriots

5 of 8

The Patriots have to face off against one of the league's top shut-down cornerbacks, Darrelle Revis, twice a year—so they might as well go out and get their own shut-down cornerback.

Nnamdi Asomugha would certainly be an enticing free agent target for Bill Belichick, and New England's front office definitely could pull the trigger.

New England's secondary is already loaded with Devin McCourty and Leigh Bodden, but the addition of Asomugha would undoubtedly turn New England's pass defense to one of the league's best.

The Patriots may have drafted cornerback Ras-I Dowling, but we all know that Belichick loves to stockpile defensive backs—so why not acquire the best available cornerback in the prime of his career?

In my opinion, the Patriots need to do whatever it takes to win now, as the clock is ticking on Tom Brady's illustrious career.

Philadelphia Eagles

6 of 8

Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Asante Samuel may be not the best cornerback in the league, but he's certainly among the top.

If Philly were to acquire Asomugha, he'd team up with Samuel to create one of the more dominant secondaries in all of football.

The Eagles are definitely a team that is ready to win. as they're a prime destination for Asomugha.

Baltimore Ravens

7 of 8

The Baltimore Ravens' once elite defense is not getting any younger, especially their secondary.

The Ravens may have drafted Jimmy Smith early in this year's past draft, but Asomugha is simply too much of a prolific force to pass on.

Asomugha is only 30 years old and has at least three to five years left at playing at such a high level, and by adding Asomugha, the Ravens would immediately turn into a Super Bowl favorite.

Oakland Raiders

8 of 8

Yes, believe it or not, Nnamdi Asomugha may not be going anywhere after all.

It's clear that the Al Davis and the Oakland Raiders are not afraid of handing out huge contracts, so what would stop them from giving their best player a very large contract?

Asomugha is from the area and has a quality relationship with the team's management, as it appears that the Raiders are headed in the right direction, so he could very well feel like hopping on the team's bandwagon moving forward.
