NBA Trade Rumors: What's Best Deal for Minnesota Timberwolves No. 2 Draft Pick?

Kyle VassaloJun 22, 2011

The Timberwolves have had no luck when it comes to drafting talent. If they would have traded away their picks for the last half decade for surefire talent, they would be much better off as a franchise.

Perhaps that is the route they are trying to go. It doesn't seem as though they are sold on any of the picks in the draft as being All-Star caliber players. With the No. 2 pick, that is the sort of player they would be looking for.

There are rumors popping up all over the place about them trying to deal the pick away. Here are five such rumors.

Steve Nash

1 of 5

Trade Value: 4/10

The Suns have offered up Steve Nash for the 2nd overall pick. It would be a great deal for the Suns, as they aren't a contender and are delaying the inevitable rebuilding process by hanging onto Nash.

The 2nd overall pick is a lot to give up for the Timberwolves. Nash is 37. Five years ago this may have been feasible. The fact of the matter is, Ricky Rubio has more solid basketball in him than Nash.

Marcin Gortat and No. 13

2 of 5

Trade Value: 7/10

Unlike the Steve Nash scenario, the Timberwolves would be getting a pick. Trading down is much safer than trading a pick away entirely.

They would reportedly have to give up Nikola Pekovic, but would be picking up Marcin Gortat in the process. The Suns have shied away from this rumor of late, but that could be because they see trading away Nash as a better option now.

Andrew Bynum

3 of 5

Trade Value: 9/10

Andrew Bynum is only 23 years old. He's not Dwight Howard, but he's a coveted big man who might be on the block. After the epic meltdown in L.A., it seems as though some change is in order.

The Lakers aren't going to be drafting this high as long as Kobe Bryant is on the roster. The thought of bringing in a prospect like Derrick Williams and potentially even Kyrie Irving has to at least spark their interest.

The Timberwolves pitched this offer, which decreases the likelihood of this actually happening.

Roy Hibbert and No. 15

4 of 5

Trade Value: 7/10

Larry Bird is now backing off the offer that he reportedly served up that would send Roy Hibbert to Minnesota and land the Pacers the 2nd overall pick.

Maybe it's because the Timberwolves wanted a little something extra. If they aren't able to bring Andrew Bynum or a player of his caliber in, trading for Roy Hibbert and still hanging onto a top 15 pick may be the best scenario.

Bird says Hibbert is one of the core guys on the Pacers, and that he isn't going anywhere. Don't be surprised if he makes a move for the No. 2 pick if the Timberwolves offer the right package.

Pau Gasol

5 of 5

Pau Gasol's name has been thrown in the trade rumor mix. He went MIA down the stretch and regressed from All-Star to no show when his team needed him the most.

Even so, he presents a heck of a lot of value to a team like Minnesota. He wants to stay in LA, but is the feeling mutual?

Gasol is seven years older than Bynum and may be at the root of the Lakers' collapse. The Lakers could be enticed by the No. 2 pick enough to part ways with a 30 year old Gasol.
