WWE Capitol Punishment Preview: Primer for the Pay-Per-View in Washington, DC
WWE taps into its political side for a pay-per-view designed to peak the interest of the politics and pundits alike who I'm sure were just dying for an excuse to show up to a pro wrestling event in between scandals.
WWE has done a nice job giving each advertised match sufficient attention and build. While it will be easy to dismiss WWE Capitol Punishment as just another pay-per-view in an inflated market of pay-per-view offerings, each match is accompanied by a legitimate storyline with none of the matches coming out of nowhere or booked at the last minute.

Duh...Politics. Expect actual politicians to hide behind an unfounded set of standards as they're too busy tweeting their junk to dare associate themselves with the crass world of pro wrestling. Instead, WWE will likely continue to spoof politics with more doctored press conference vignettes or, dare I say, political impersonators.
Predictability. While WWE has done an above average job of building towards Capitol Punishment, creating more intriguing adversaries for a familiar pair top babyfaces on RAW and SmackDown, this seems to be a "place holder" card before a pair of more high profile pay-per-views in Money in the Bank and SummerSlam.
Few people actually believe that R-Truth, while proficiently reinvented, will leave D.C. with the WWE Championship (not in Vince's house), and the worst kept secret in pro wrestling is that Christian is not a top flight star in the eyes of the powers that be.
Inadvertent intrigue, however, has been added to the pay-per-view in wake of World Champion Randy Orton's concussion situation, which could possibly result in the crowning of a new World Champion if Orton is unable to go.
WWE Divas...not! WWE is right back to who gives a crap mode when it comes to booking WWE Divas since Kharma decided she wanted to achieve her "goal" of becoming a mom while competing in arguably the most dangerous and deadly profession in entertainment (that's not unstable).
There are currently no Diva's matches booked for the pay-per-view. The Divas have been mixed and matched in short group matches that mean nothing, while the Bella Twins carry that belt around as an accessory that compliments their sparkly outfits.
Meanwhile, the GLAAD-friendly Diva-Dirt.com website has begun to cover syndicated episodes of Jerry Springer and Oxygen's Bad Girl's Club to fill content. The site is already filled with complaints that Jade from season 6 isn't getting her push. Please click the link so they don't go out of business due to the absent Divas.
WWE Capitol Punishment Predictions
WWE Championship: John Cena (c) over R-Truth. R-Truth has been great in his role as RAW's top heel, providing a refreshing character who presents a strong case to win the WWE Championship.
But WWE's storied history of never having an African-American WWE Champion will likely continue as Cena and Alberto Del Rio seems to be in the books (for now) for SummerSlam.
John Cena wins in a move that will warrant the rest of the WWE Universe waiting until RAW to see what happened.
The Miz over Alex Riley. Alex Riley is a red hot babyface, and the Alex Riley Bandwagon will likely be kept strong even in defeat. But Miz needs some heat back after getting beaten up by Riley in back to back weeks before doing the job to "Rowdy" Roddy Piper this past week on RAW. Expect the Miz to win with Alex Riley getting the better of him in a post-match attack.
World Championship: Randy Orton (c, ?) over Christian. Should Orton be good to go, he will likely topple Christian as Christian is not far enough along in his heel turn to warrant another championship run.
Orton's concussion could throw a monkey wrench into creative plans to drop Christian right back down to the midcard following a loss on Sunday.
In fact, this developing story could very well end up in yet another improbable World Championship win for Christian.
WWE Intercontinental Championship (c) Ezekiel Jackson over Wade Barrett. With the Corre ditching Wade Barrett, expect Ezekiel Jackson to finally go over clean as Barrett will be without the benefit of outside interference.
Alberto Del Rio over the Big Show (by DQ). The Big Show has been re-booked as a monster, and I have a fleeting feeling that once he finally gets his hands on Alberto Del Rio he will get carried away, mess around, and get himself disqualified.
CM Punk over Rey Mysterio Jr. Uncertainty surrounding CM Punk's future has made every match involving the straight edge superstar an adventure. This match is a toss up, but since Mysterio went over in their last match, Punk will likely get his revenge to even up the recent series at two.
WWE United States Championship: Kofi Kingston (c) over Dolph Ziggler. WWE has done everything they can to make their fans care about a match between Kofi Kingston and Dolph Ziggler in a battle for start-and-stopped supremacy. Each periodically neglected superstar has even received his very own video package on RAW! Kingston "owes" the former fluke World Champion a victory, so in all likelihood he goes over.
Projected Buyrate
WWE is debuting a brand new, unbranded pay-per-view in close proximity to a SummerSlam. While a stellar card, WWE Capitol Punishment has "overlooked" written all over it.
WWE Over the Limit reportedly drew one of the lowest buyrates in history on a card where nobody believed Cena's WWE Championship was in danger in an I Quit Match - a match he's never lost.
Using the same logic, John Cena being heavily favored over a "type of athlete" that WWE has never put their top title on bodes terribly for Capitol Punishment. Father's day festivities will also hurt the pay-per-view's buyrate.
The pay-per-view may be aided by a misguided select crowd of people who will expect Barack Obama to show up. 60,000 buys.
