NFL's Top 10 Active Players to Never Win a Super Bowl
LeBron James and Dirk Nowitzki helped lead their basketball teams to the 2011 NBA Finals. James and Nowitzki were considered two of the best players in NBA history to never earn a ring. This past Sunday, Nowitzki graduated from that list, while James continues his quest to win a title.
Many great football players enter the NFL, all hoping to leave with at least one Super Bowl ring. Few achieve that dream, while many are still searching. Many have come close, and some have struggled their entire careers.
I have put together the top 10 players currently in the league who are still searching for a Super Bowl ring. Let me know what you think!
10. Derrick Mason, WR
1 of 10
Derrick Mason has compiled over 10,000 receiving yards and has the fourth-most receiving yards of all active receivers in the league today. Mason has not missed a game in the last eight years.
Despite avoiding the injury bug for most of his career, Mason has never earned a Super Bowl ring.
Almost: In Super Bowl XXXIV, the Titans squared off against the surprising Rams. Mason’s teammate, Kevin Dyson, almost came away with a catch that could have created the greatest ending in Super Bowl history. With six seconds remaining at the Rams' 10-yard line, Steve McNair dished a pass to Dyson at the 5-yard line. Dyson was stopped by Mike Jones at the 1-yard line, preventing Super Bowl heartbreak.
Tennessee Oilers/Titans (1997-2004)
Baltimore Ravens (2005-present)
9. Champ Bailey, CB
2 of 10
Among all active defensive players in the league today, Champ Bailey has the third-most career interceptions with 48 in 12 seasons. He has limited many elite receivers in games and has kept them out of the end zone. Bailey holds the record for most Pro Bowl invitations by a cornerback.
While he has had many years of success, Bailey has not been able to win a Super Bowl with the Redskins or the Broncos.
Almost: In the 2006 postseason, the Broncos hosted the young and hot Steelers in the AFC Championship Game. Bailey and his defensive teammates struggled as Ben Roethlisberger handled the Broncos defense with ease.
Washington Redskins (1999-2003)
Denver Broncos (2004-present)
8. Tony Gonzalez, TE
3 of 10
Tony Gonzalez owns the records for most receptions, yards and touchdowns by a tight end in NFL history. Gonzalez has been a key factor in helping create multiple dynamic offenses while playing for the Chiefs and Falcons. However, not only has Gonzalez failed to reach the Super Bowl, but he has also never won a playoff game.
Almost: In the 1998 playoffs, the Broncos came into the loudest stadium in the NFL in Week 2 of the postseason. On 4th-and-2 with 14 seconds left to go in the game, Elvis Grbac’s pass to Gonzalez in the corner of the end zone was batted down by Darrien Gordon.
Kansas City Chiefs (1997-2008)
Atlanta Falcons (2009-present)
7. Fred Taylor, RB
4 of 10
Fred Taylor is very under-appreciated and is not well known for what he has accomplished in his NFL career. Little do football fans know that he has rushed for over 10,000 rushing yards in his career. Fans have only voted Taylor into the Pro Bowl once, and that was in 2007.
Taylor has not played in many postseason contests but did come close to reaching the Super Bowl at an early point in his career.
Almost: The Jaguars entered the 2000 postseason with the best record in the league. In the divisional round of the playoffs, the Jaguars blew out the Dolphins, 62-7. However, the Titans stunned the Jaguars in the AFC Championship Game and prevented them from reaching the Super Bowl.
Jacksonville Jaguars (1998-2008)
New England Patriots (2009-present)
6. Randy Moss, WR
5 of 10
Excluding his short second stint, Randy Moss spent six remarkable years with the Minnesota Vikings. But he is best remembered for what he and his teammates accomplished in his first season as a New England Patriot.
Moss was a key factor in helping the Patriots shatter many records in 2007. The Patriots hold the records for most points, touchdowns and wins in a regular season. The Patriots became the first 16-0 team in NFL history. Moss also earned an individual record for most touchdown receptions in a single season.
The record-setting Patriots entered the 2008 postseason destined to win the Super Bowl. But a miracle catch prevented that.
Almost: Moss and the Patriots had defeated the New York Giants in the regular season finale and had high hopes of doing the same thing in round two. However, in the Super Bowl, Eli Manning escaped the Patriots' defensive line to find David Tyree, who used his helmet as a surface to make a miracle catch. One big catch led to another, as Manning found Plaxico Burress in the end zone and pulled one of the biggest upsets in Super Bowl history.
Minnesota Vikings (1998-2004, 2010)
Oakland Raiders (2005-2006)
New England Patriots (2007-2010)
Tennessee Titans (2010-present)
5. Brian Urlacher, LB
6 of 10
Despite all of the ups and downs the Chicago Bears have gone through, Brian Urlacher has been the face of the Bears since entering the league in 2000. Urlacher holds the franchise record for most tackles in a career and in a single season. He earned NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2000 and the AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2005.
Urlacher has led the Bears to four division victories and one Super Bowl. However, the Bears fell short in that big game.
Almost: In the 2007 postseason, Urlacher and the Bears entered the Super Bowl with one goal in mind. But Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts defeated the Bears, as Manning earned his first ring while Urlacher was forced to continue searching.
Chicago Bears (2000-present)
4. Ed Reed, S
7 of 10
Ed Reed is one of the most explosive safeties in the league today. Reed has led the league in interceptions three times and holds the record for the longest interception return in NFL history. He’s also second all-time for most yards returned off interceptions.
Reed’s contributions have been recognized on defense, but he has made a big impact on special teams. Throughout his career, Reed has blocked four punts, returning three for touchdowns. He is also the first player in NFL history to return an interception, punt, blocked punt and fumble for a touchdown. However, all of his success with Baltimore has equated to zero Super Bowl appearances.
Almost: As a No. 6 seed, the Ravens stunned the Dolphins and the Titans in the 2009 postseason. But in the end, the Steelers stopped the Ravens in the AFC Championship Game to advance and eventually win the Super Bowl. Reed recorded two interceptions in the playoffs, both in Week 1 of the postseason.
Baltimore Ravens (2002-present)
3. Terrell Owens, WR
8 of 10
Terrell Owens is second all-time in receiving yards and is the only player to have caught two touchdowns against all 32 teams. As one of the most animated and controversial players to ever play the game, Owens is still seeking a Super Bowl victory.
Owens has reached the playoffs with three different teams and has come close multiple times to winning a ring.
Almost: After suffering an injury in Week 15 of the 2004 regular season, the Eagles reached the Super Bowl without Owens. Owens reunited with the team after the Eagles won the NFC Championship Game. However, the Patriots defeated the Eagles in Super Bowl XXXIX.
San Francisco 49ers (1996-2003)
Philadelphia Eagles (2004-2005)
Dallas Cowboys (2006-2008)
Buffalo Bills (2009)
Cincinnati Bengals (2010-present)
2. LaDainian Tomlinson, RB
9 of 10
LaDainian Tomlinson spent nine seasons with the San Diego Chargers and has become one of the more accomplished running backs in league history.
Tomlinson started and played in every game in his first eight years of his career with the Chargers and rushed for 1,000 yards each of those eight seasons. He is sixth all-time in league history in rushing yards. However, Tomlinson and the Chargers were not able to capture the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
Almost: In the 2008 AFC Championship Game, the Chargers squared off against the 17-0 Patriots. Although the Chargers forced Tom Brady to throw a season-high three interceptions, it wasn’t enough, as the Patriots advanced to the Super Bowl. Tomlinson left the game early due to an injury.
San Diego Chargers (2001-2009)
New York Jets (2010-present)
1. Donovan McNabb, QB
10 of 10
Between the 2002 and the 2009 postseasons, Donovan McNabb led the Philadelphia Eagles to the NFC Championship Game five times, the most out of any team in the NFC last decade. Winning postseason games has never been a challenge for McNabb. However, McNabb and the Eagles were unsuccessful in picking up a win in the Super Bowl.
Almost: McNabb and the Eagles appeared in only one Super Bowl. They fell to the Patriots in Super Bowl XXXIX as New England captured its third title in four years.
