Dallas Mavericks: Congratulations from a Spurs Fan
When the NBA Finals began nearly two weeks ago, it was a no-win situation for Spurs fans.
After such a promising regular-season that was going so well it became uncomfortable, hopes of a championship were shattered by late injuries and burnt out luck.
Then a choice had to be made: Do you root for your arch-rival and enemy that you've always loved to hate, or do you root for the team that the entire country loves to hate?
Do you root for a couple of men who have spent nearly a decade verbally degrading your hometown and team (looking at you, Mark Cuban and Jason Terry), or do you root for a few guys who have degraded the entire country with the exception of one city in southern Florida?
Do you root for Dirk Nowitzki: a gentleman who happens to be a superstar and has worked so hard bring this moment to his team, or do you root for LeBron James: an egotistical maniac who left his home state in the dirt for sunny beaches and more spotlight?
Finally, do you root for the team representing the Great State of Texas and can complete the Texas Triangle of Champions, or do you root for a team whose fan base is only interested in fame and glory (so much so that they celebrated before the season even started) but not the process of earning it?
After asking all those questions, the answer started become more clear. As the series progressed, the answer became obvious.
The Dallas Mavericks played with determination and the heart of a champion while the Miami Heat were too busy celebrating themselves and acting like jerks (to put it nicely).
I couldn't help but laugh as more and more bad publicity about the Heatles and their antics came out. I couldn't help but smile when Nowitzki subtly jabbed them right back.
Now, as I sit here and type, I can't help but feel the satisfaction that the Mavs came out on top. Dallas brings yet another championship to the Lone Star State.
Nowitzki can join Tim Duncan as living proof that the good guys always come out on top.
So, from a fellow Texan whose heart will always bleed Silver and Black, congratulations Dallas fans! Take pride in the fact that you not only represent your city but also the entire state of Texas.
Enjoy this moment for the rest of your lives, for it will never leave you even during the darkest times.
Hold that trophy high above your heads and use it as motivation for the future, not satisfaction of the present. You are NBA Champions and will continue to be until someone else takes it away.
Until then, congratulations and see you next year!
