Philadelpihia Eagles: 5 Bold Predictions for the 2011 NFL Season
Presuming there is a season this year, the Philadelphia Eagles are poised to make some serious noise in the NFL for the 2011 season.
Coming off a year with so much hype and an ending to the season that left a bad taste in players and fans mouths alike, the sky is the limit for the Eagles this year.
Here are five bold predictions that I feel this year's Eagles are ready and more capable of making a reality.
The Eagles Will Sign WR Plaxico Burress
1 of 5
Set to be released from prison later this month, wide receiver Plaxico Burress could add another deep-threat to the already potent Eagles offense.
With Burress' big-play history, opposing defenses will have to let up on Eagles star wide receiver DeSean Jackson and the up-and-coming Jeremy Maclin, opening up an opportunity for a game changing play on any given play.
Adding Burress gives the Eagles the best wide receiver core in the NFL hands down and would also create more opportunities for LeSean McCoy to have big yardage plays rushing, as well as Michael Vick having more spots to gain first downs if the defense put the majority of the defensive attention on the receiver core.
Getting Plaxico on board would be a game changer for the Eagles and might be the hire that pushes the Eagles to the next level in the playoffs.
Michael Vick Will Win MVP
2 of 5
Coming off a career best year, Eagles quarterback Michael Vick will build off the success he had last year and show why he is the most dynamic player in the league.
Vick will throw for 3,330 yards—up from 3,018 yards last season—and rush fewer times this year keeping him around the 500 yard mark—just by Vick being smarter not to take off too often and when he does, knowing when to go down before taking a big hit— escaping injuries that can be easily avoided.
Vick's total touchdowns will rise from the 30 total touchdowns last year—21 passing and nine rushing—to somewhere around the 35-38 range.
With those kinds of numbers it would be just about a guarantee that Vick will end the season as the NFL's MVP.
LeSean McCoy Will Gain 2,000 Total Yards
3 of 5
LeSean McCoy saw a big improvement from his 2009 stats to his 2010 stats and will see an even bigger jump in productivity this upcoming season.
McCoy will have more opportunities than last year seeing how DeSean Jackson is one of the most dangerous wide receivers in the game, and Jeremy Maclin is a rising star himself, will also see increased coverage this season.
With the receiving core are more than likely to have the attention of the Eagles opponent's defense—with or with out Plaxico Burress—McCoy will have more opportunities to break big runs and catch more dump-offs from Vick, which will result in more yards and more touchdowns for McCoy this year.
Look for his numbers to jump from 1,674 total yards—1,082 rushing 592 receiving—with nine touchdowns, to somewhere around the 2,000 total yard mark with 11 touchdowns.
Kevin Kolb Will Not Be Traded This Year
4 of 5
With all the trade speculation surrounding Eagles' backup quarterback Kevin Kolb and where he'll end up, surprisingly, I think he won't be going anywhere.
Though there are teams out there that want Kolb, the Eagles will keep Kolb, opting to save him just in case the Eagle's star quarterback, Michael Vick is injured at some point in the season and will have a viable backup to keep the team going in the right direction if Vick is absent.
This will only strengthen the Eagles side in lieu of a trade next offseason, seeing that their aren't any in-coming quarterbacks or current quarterbacks expected to make a big showing this year and will be available next offseason.
This will give the Eagles more time to decide just what they want in return for Kolb, without the distraction of a lockout looming over head.
The Eagles Will Make a Super Bowl Run
5 of 5
This year is the year for the Eagles. With all the returning talent on both sides of the ball, the Eagles are poised to make a serious Super Bowl push.
With MVP candidate Vick on offense with his crew of DeSean Jackson, LeSean McCoy and the rest being together for a full season the Eagles offense will only improve from last year, helping the Eagles avoid the offensive pitfalls they suffered against the Green Bay Packer's in the playoffs last season.
The defense led by Pro Bowl cornerback Asante Samuel, will be up to the challenge this year, but will need to add someone to aid Samuel in the back field, as the Eagles were at time susceptible to the long ball last year.
This is the year the Philadelphia Eagles take home their first Super Bowl title in franchise history.
