NBA Free Agency 2011: Tim Duncan and the 10 Best Defenders Available This Summer

John RozumMay 4, 2011

Just like the NFL, the NBA may get locked out come time for next season.

However, that doesn't mean coaches, scouts and anyone else involved with player personnel isn't going to scan the free-agent market.

That said, for those who favor the dark side and like to get down and dirty, defense is where it's at.

So, here are the 10 best defenders available come time for the offseason.

Shane Battier: SF, Memphis Grizzlies

The stats don't say a lot, but those that have played against Shane Battier sure do.

He's arguably the best one-on-one defender in the game, and has the ability to force anyone into taking a bad shot.

Currently in his second stint with Memphis, Battier was a crucial part in shutting down the Western Conference No. 1 seed San Antonio Spurs.

Tyson Chandler: C, Dallas Mavericks

CHICAGO, IL - JANUARY 20: Derrick Rose #1 of the Chicago Bulls goes up for a shot against Tyson Chandler #6 of the Dallas Mavericks at the United Center on January 20, 2011 in Chicago, Illinois. The Bulls defeated the Mavericks 82-77. NOTE TO USER: User e

He's excellent in the low post and rebounds with the best of them. Tyson Chandler has become a defensive force for the Mavs.

This season has been a rejuvenation, if you will, after he somewhat underperformed the past couple of seasons.

In any event, Mark Cuban should do whatever he can to retain Chandler this offseason.

Grant Hill: SF, Phoenix Suns

If only Grant Hill had some help defensively, maybe the Suns would allow less than 105 points per game.

However, if in the right system, Hill can provide excellent veteran leadership along with a solid defensive game.

And, although it's unrelated, he can score rather effectively as well.

Rebounding and the low post are Carl Landry's defensive strengths.

The stats pertaining to boards may not be sexy, but positioning himself to at least make way for a teammate is just as effective.

That said, forcing opponents into uncomfortable situations does the job, as does preventing the easy shot.

Luc Richard Mbah a Moute: SF, Milwaukee Bucks

With Andrew Bogut hogging the glass, Luc Richard Mbah a Moute keeps opposing offenses in check by forcing them to kick it back out.

That said, with his contributions being more so like a CB in football that doesn't get challenged by the QB, Mbah a Moute allows him teammates to get the statistical glory.

Andrei Kirilenko: SF, Utah Jazz

After the departure of PG Deron Williams, Andrei Kirilenko is the most recognizable player in Utah.

However, with AK-47 being a free agent this summer, it's difficult to say that he remains with the Jazz.

Therefore, don't be surprised if he's on the move since those needing defense will be chomping at the bit.

Tim Duncan: PF/C, San Antonio Spurs

Despite his age, "The Big Fundamental" still has the ability to get the job done.

Although his averages are not his career-best (averaged a career-low in minutes per game), Tim Duncan's presence in the paint is the real factor.

He's also one of the quickest players within a 10-foot radius, which is all he needs to be—hence, fundamental.

Wilson Chandler: SF, Denver Nuggets

As part of the Carmelo Anthony trade, Wilson Chandler remained under the radar, as much of the attention was on the new New York Knicks.

But, Chandler rallied the troops and helped the Nuggets get into the postseason and gave them potential for a bright future.

He's a solid defensive player playing for a coach who likes defense. If Chandler signs elsewhere this summer, Denver fans be angry.

Tayshaun Prince: SF, Detroit Pistons

Although he's more of an all-around player than defensive, his intelligence, effort and attitude are second to none.

Not to mention he has been named to the NBA's All-Defensive Second Team four times.

Also, he's a leader on and off the court, so whoever signs him will be getting a great person in addition to the tangibles.

Samuel Dalembert: C, Sacramento Kings

He may appear to be undersized for a big man, but Samuel Dalembert plays not only big, but with great athleticism.

He's strong up near the rim and diminishes the confidence of those who try to shoot over him.

The team receiving his signature will easily add talent and depth to their big-man rotation.
