NBA: Watch Brandon Roy's Final Dagger Against Dallas Mavericks in Game 4
Brandon Roy Video Shows Veteran Hit Game-Winner Against Mavericks in Historic Comeback
The Portland Trail Blazers were down, 67-44, with 1:15 remaining in the third quarter of Game 4 against the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday.
That's when Brandon Roy, coming off January's midseason surgery on both knees, proved he still has some life in those legs.
After hitting a three-pointer to close out the third quarter, Roy led one of the biggest comebacks in NBA playoffs history; the Blazers outscored the Dallas Mavericks 35-15 in the final quarter, with Roy scoring or assisting in their last 16 points.
Fittingly, Roy closed off the night in thrilling fashion, banking home a jumper from the free-throw line and sending the Blazers back to Dallas having evened the series at two games apiece.
Crazy to think that this guy played for just eight minutes in the Blazers' 101-89 loss in game two. Even crazier to think that this guy, once the face of the franchise, became that face once again despite a nightmare of a regular season.
As recently as Tuesday, Roy was being viewed as a former superstar on his last legs, forever destined to be a contributor off the bench.
Sure, he'd still probably have a decent career, but he wouldn't provide us with the same thrills as he once did.
How wrong we were.
Funny where heart and determination can get you, huh?
After that game two loss, Roy told The Oregonian that he was admittedly disappointed in the way he was treated—coach Nate McMillan using Nicolas Batum, Rudy Fernandez, and even rookie Patty Mills while he languished on the bench.
Roy played 24 minutes on Saturday, and he scored 24 points. Including the game-winner.
Now the Dallas Mavericks are disappointed in McMillan for unleashing this nightmare on them.
Except Roy isn't a figment of their imagination. He's very real and he's here to stay.
