Rajon Rondo Overrated: How Did He Have the 3rd Highest Selling Jersey?

Dorth RaphaelyApr 14, 2011

I must say that I was pretty surprised that Rajon Rondo of the Boston Celtics ranked No. 3 on the list of best selling jersey of 2010-2011.

Rondo may play for a big market, but I would've thought that The Big Three on his own team (Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett) would be selling more jerseys that Rondo. (This data is from NBAStore.com).

Rondo is a very polarizing player. Fans either think he is very overrated or very underrated, depending upon who you ask. Boston fans, who are typically the most biased fans in the country think he is underrated.

Rondo is a great role player and a perfect fit for the Celtics because he spreads the ball around so well to other stars, but this brings me back to my original point: how in the world did Rondo come in third behind Kobe Bryant and LeBron James?

He is nowhere in their league in terms of ability, marketability, or personality, but somehow fans looked passed all that and recognized him for the great "role" player that he is. Or maybe his jersey is selling well because it is cooler (you get more cred from your friends) to support an no-name player than a super star.

I think it has a lot to do with his personality or lack there of. Supporting a boring player shows to your friends that you are looking past the marketing of a player to their true talents (or lack there of).

I am sure many Boston fans may disagree with some of my points. Let's hear from you!
