Washington Wizards: Why You Should Be Preparing For a 2013-2014 Title Run
There is nowhere to go but up for the 2010-2011 Washington Wizards.
After winning only 21 of their first 78 games, detractors would like to add this year to a growing pile of forgettable basketball seasons in this nation's capital.
This season, however, has seen a group of young of players develop into a wrecking ball determined to tear through the Eastern conference for years to come.
Don't be fooled by a record of 21-57—this team has been plagued by injuries and is rostered primarily with rookie players adjusting to the NBA lifestyle.
The Wizards have two rookie guards in John Wall and Jordan Crawford who are both capable of putting up a triple-double.
In addition, JaVale McGee is a league leader in blocks and even posted a triple-double against the formidable Chicago Bulls. With an upcoming Top Five pick in the 2011 draft, another first-round pick acquired form the Atlanta Hawks and Rashard Lewis' crippling contract coming off the books in 2012-2013, perfect conditions loom for the 2013-2014 season.
Wall, Jordan, and McGee will be coming into their primes just in time for enough cap space to be freed up for a major free-agent signing.
Furthermore, Kevin Seraphin and Trevor Booker, who have also showed a lot of promise this year add much-needed toughness, rebounding and defense.
A crafty pick like Perry Jones or Jonas Valanciunas in the upcoming draft combined with development or resigning of either Nick Young or Andray Blatche, could form a starting five capable of contending with any team in the league.
In addition, the league may witness Washington fans rejoicing in 2013-2014, as Rashard Lewis' expired contract clears up enough space to add a top-tier free agent to an already intimidating roster.
It's been a while since Washingtonians have tasted some success. Luckily, they shouldn't feel too downtrodden, because the future is looking bright.
Let's hope the wait is worth it.
