2011 NFL Mock Draft: The Green Bay Packers' 7-Round Projections

Matt SteinApr 11, 2011

The Green Bay Packers are the defending Super Bowl Champions and are looking to reload their team for another postseason run.

They were crippled with injuries during the course of 2010 and will seek quality players to give the team even more depth. Adding a pass-rusher looks to be the Packers' biggest draft need, but offensive line, running back and defensive end will also need to be addressed.

Here is a look at how the Green Bay Packers' 2011 NFL Draft might turn out.

First Round, 32nd Pick: Justin Houston, OLB

1 of 9

Justin Houston is the ideal fit for Dom Capers' 3-4 rush-happy defense.

Houston showed the potential to be an elite pass-rusher while at Georgia, but had an inconsistent career.  He has the speed to beat opposing linemen and chase down the quarterback, not to mention the ideal size and power. Houston tested well at the combine, but will need to put forth the effort to improve his game.

Projected 2011-2012 Stats: 43 tackles, 6 sacks, 1 interception

Second Round, 32nd Pick: Marcus Cannon, OL

2 of 9
FORT WORTH, TX - NOVEMBER 28: Marcus Cannon #61, Kyle Dooley #72 and Alonzo Adams #81 of the TCU Horned Frogs raise the Mountain West Regular Season Championship trophy at Amon G. Carter Stadium on November 28, 2009 in Fort Worth, Texas. (Photo by Ronal

In case you don't know who Marcus Cannon is, he is the gigantic lineman wearing No. 61.

Cannon is 6'6" and 350 pounds, the ideal size for linemen in the NFL.  He will most likely need a few years to develop into a starter, but could end up being a quality starter for the Packers in the future.  Cannon isn't the most physical lineman in the draft and won't overpower anyone, but he has all the tools necessary to play in the league.

Projected 2011-2012 Stats: 0 starts, 8 game appearances

Third Round, 32nd Pick: DeMarco Murray, RB

3 of 9
GLENDALE, AZ - JANUARY 01: DeMarco Murray #7 of the Oklahoma Sooners runs the football to score a touchdown in the first quarter against the Connecticut Huskies during the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl at the Universtity of Phoenix Stadium on January 1, 2011 in G

DeMarco Murray had an exceptional four-year career at Oklahoma, gaining more than 5,000 yards of offense and 63 touchdowns.  He has good size, speed and is a fantastic receiver out of the backfield.

The biggest issue scouts have found with Murray is his durability, as he was injured each year at Oklahoma.  He has the potential to be a starter for the Packers if he can stay healthy, but might best be used as a Kevin Faulk-type third-down specialist.

Projected 2011-2012 Stats: 68 rushes, 243 yards, 22 receptions, 179 yards, 2 touchdowns

Fourth Round, 32nd Pick: Ras-I Dowling, CB

Sam Shields and Tramon Williams stepped up in the postseason and look to be the future at the cornerback position for the Packers.

However, Charles Woodson is starting to get older, and there has been talk of his possible move to the safety position.  Ras-I Dowling has the size and ball skills to be a very good cover corner in the NFL.  Dowling has had trouble with injuries at Virginia, and that is what will probably make him drop into the later rounds.

If Woodson moves to safety, Dowling could be a steal in this round as a nickel corner.

Projected 2011-2012 Stats: 18 tackles, 1 interception

Fourth Round, 34th Pick (Compensatory): Casey Matthews, ILB

The Packers need to add some depth to their linebackers and having two Matthews on the same team could prove to be rather entertaining.

This pick is probably a little too high to spend on Matthews, but if Casey is anything like his brother Clay, it will be well worth the pick.  Casey is a little undersized for the NFL, but if he can add some weight and keep his intensity up, he could be a good role player.

The greatest asset he might bring to the Packers is another set of long, flowing locks.

Projected 2011-2012 Stats: 34 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 forced fumble

Fifth Round, 32nd Pick: Greg Romeus, DE

6 of 9

If Greg Romeus is still available at this pick, it will be hard for the Packers to pass on him.

Romeus was the 2009 Big East Co-Defensive Player of the Year, and even though he had a difficult senior season, he has the necessary tools to be a quality pass-rusher off the edge.  He has good size and strength, but he is another player who has injury concerns surrounding him.  If Romeus can stay healthy in Green Bay, he could add depth to the defensive line.

Projected 2011-2012 Stats: 8 tackles, 1 sack

Sixth Round, 32nd Pick: Tori Gurley, WR

7 of 9
COLUMBIA, SC - OCTOBER 30: Tori Gurley #81 of the South Carolina Gamecocks against the Tennessee Volunteers during their game at Williams-Brice Stadium on October 30, 2010 in Columbia, South Carolina. (Photo by Streeter Lecka/Getty Images)

The Packers currently boast one of the most talented and deepest receiving groups in the NFL.

However, Donald Driver's game is starting to weaken as he ages, and James Jones could possibly test the free agent market.  Right now, Tori Gurley is just a big body with good hands.  He lacks elite speed, can't separate from defenders and isn't a very good route-runner.  He had a decent combine workout though, and in the right system, he could be a decent third or fourth option and a good possession receiver.

Projected 2011-2012 Stats: 5 receptions, 33 yards

Seventh Round, First Pick (from Carolina): Keith Williams, OG

8 of 9
LINCOLN, NE - SEPTEMBER 04: Head Coach Bo Pelini of the Nebraska Cornhuskers talks with Keith Williams #68 during a break in second half action of their game against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers at Memorial Stadium on September 4, 2010 in Lincoln, Neb

With these last picks in the draft, the Packers are just hoping to find a gem or a role player.

Keith Williams is going to need to figure out what it means to work, but with the right environment, he has the size and physical ability to be a solid rotational-type player.

Projected 2011-2012 Stats: 0 starts

Seventh Round, 32nd Pick: Evan Royster, RB

9 of 9

Evan Royster is Penn State's all-time leading rusher, and that is a pretty respectable feat.  He gained some weight between his junior and senior season, and that seemed to affect his play.  He is never going to be the most impressive runner on a team, but if he gets back down to a good playing weight, he could be a good role player.
