Philadelphia 76ers: Top 10 Dunks of Their 2011 Season
With only a handful of games left in the regular season, I thought it was time to take a look back on the 10 best dunks thrown down by the Sixers this year.
When you think 76ers and dunking, you can't help but think of Dr.J and his "Rock the Baby" dunk over Micheal Cooper. It's in the pantheon of great dunks and it will likely never be forgotten by those who have seen it. While there are no dunks that approach that level of epicness in this years selection, it's still a very entertaining selection of dunks that I hope you will enjoy.
As with any list, this is just one man's opinion, so feel free to leave me a comment if I missed a particular dunk or if you don't agree with the order of the list.
10. Craig Brackins Makes Use of His Limited Minutes
1 of 10Who?
Yes folks, his name is Craig Brackins and he does in fact play for the Philadelphia 76ers. I'll give you a pass if you blinked and missed the three games that Brackins played in this year.
But you've got to give him credit for finding the time to contribute a dunk that was just good enough to crack the top 10 list.
9. Andre Iguodala (The First of Many)
2 of 10It should come as no surprise that Andre Iguodala is on this list, and you should expect to see a lot more of him before it is all over.
This particular windmill dunk is definitely stylish, but I put it at the bottom of the list because he had all day to think of what he was going to do.
As an added bonus, I enjoyed Andres Nocioni jumping off the bench doing a bird symbol with his hands, I guess he's saying that Iggy went flying to the hoop.
8. Marreese Speights with Authority
3 of 10This was the result of some great teamwork from the 76ers. Andre Iguodala deflects a pass, Speights recovers the loose ball and passes it to Jodie Meeks who then outlets it up-court to Iguodala, who drops off a sick no look pass back to Speights who throws it down with some authority.
I loved how Mike Dunleavy thought about going up for the block, then realized he had no shot, so he just lowers his head and turns away in shame.
7. Thaddeus Young Goes with the K.I.S.S. Method
4 of 10For those of you who are unfamiliar, the K.I.S.S. method stands for keep it simple stupid.
Thad makes a back cut to the basket and has his man beat by a mile before throwing down a simple yet effective two-handed jam. It may not have the flash of some of the other dunks, but he gets some serious height and slams it home with a lot of power.
Just like the previous dunk in this list, a defender steps up and for a moment and considers trying to stop Thad from dunking, only to shy away at the last second in hopes of avoiding having his picture end up on a poster. Well Al-Farouq Aminu, I spotted you cowering under the basket and I'm putting you on blast.
6. You Cant Stop an Iguodala Dunk, You Can Only Hope to Avoid It
5 of 10Try as he might, Gerald Wallace could not stop from being dunked on by Andre Iguodala. He didn't even try to hide it, Wallace goes with a two-handed shove, and what looks like a bit of a low blow, but it's still not enough to stop A.I. from lowering the boom on him.
Next time he sees Iggy flying to the hoop, I'd venture to guess that he'll follow in the footsteps of Dunleavy and Aminu and just get out of the way.
5. Thaddeus Young Delivers a Facial
6 of 10There's a certain uniqueness to Thad's dunks because he is a lefty, which you don't see quite as often in the NBA.
The recipient of this facial is Zaza Pachulia, which only adds to the uniqueness, because it's probably the first and only time Thad will dunk on someone named Zaza.
I really respect Thaddeus Young because you'll never see him jump around gloating after a dunk, he just goes about his business like it was any other play.
As an added bonus, check out the Hawks bench in the background of the slow-mo replay. Even they can't help but make a few faces that I interpret as "Ohhh man that was nasty."
4. Iguodala Turns Garbage into Gold
7 of 10Great dunks almost always have great calls and I thoroughly enjoyed Kevin Harlan delivering the line "Ohhh!!! Flight Nine is cleared for landing."
As for the title of this slide, turning garbage to gold, well that's a favorite line of the Sixers announcer Mark Zumoff and it fits this situation perfectly.
In this case the garbage is Elton Brands offensive moves against Kevin Garnett's defense. You might notice that before Elton even releases the ball on his turnaround jumper, Andre is crashing to the hoop for the put-back slam. That's either good instincts, or just his total lack of faith in Brand's post game.
3. Flight Nine Is Preparing for Liftoff
8 of 10This might be the highest and farthest that Iguodala jumps in any of his dunks on this list. He takes off just outside of the paint and soars right over poor Brian Cardinal.
Cardinal tried his best to take a charge, even taking a dive like he was a South American soccer player. But it was to no avail as Iggy got the foul call, resulting in an And-1, which makes sense because he has the And-1 logo tattooed on his right arm.
2. Lou Williams Does the Number 23 Proud
9 of 10I really considered making this the number one dunk on the list. It was just so unexpected and fierce that I almost took the easy way out and listed the top two dunks as One-A and One-B.
What makes this even better is the fact that Lou Williams is 6'1" and he throws it down on the 6'9" Zach Randolph. Personally, I love seeing the little guys take it to the rack and dunk it on a big man.
Here's hoping "Sweet" Lou makes it back in time for the playoffs, so he can throw it down on someone like Kevin Garnett or Chris Bosh.
1. Andre Iguodala Stars in Philadunkia
10 of 10I've got to admit right off the bat that this video is what sold me on the dunk. In terms of style, difficulty, and amazement, I'm not sure that the dunk itself should be number one.
But you've got to admit that the combination of the camera angle, slow motion, and the fact that it has it's own musical score which peaks as Iguodala throws it down makes this video so enjoyable.
So there you have it, the top 10 dunks of the 76ers season. As I said at the beginning, this list is fairly subjective, so feel free to leave a comment and let me know if I missed a dunk or if you'd change the order.
