Lou Williams Injury is Cause for Serious Concern for Philadelpia 76ers

Jarred KiddApr 3, 2011

My clever attempt at an intro goes a little something like this.

Any hopes that the Sixers had of pulling off an upset in the first round of the playoffs is now in big trouble. And you can't spell trouble without Lou.

Alright it's a little corny, but the message should still be clear. The Philadelphia 76ers took a huge hit in the third quarter of Saturday night's game against the Milwaukee Bucks when Lou Williams suffered a strained right hamstring.

"Sweet" Lou is one of the top candidates for Sixth Man of the Year. So far this season he was averaging almost 14 points a game as a reserve, which was the second highest in the NBA. His scoring punch off of the bench, along with Thaddeus Young, gives the Sixers a real edge over almost every other teams bench.

Sadly, the 76ers released a statement Sunday afternoon stating that Williams will be out "for the foreseeable future, and that his injury will be re-evaluated on a regular basis in order to monitor his progress and determine his return date."

ESPN's Marc Stein is reporting that the Sixers are looking to sign veteran guard Antonio Daniels to a 10-day contract to help fill the void. Daniels hasn't played in the NBA since 2009 when he was with the New Orleans Hornets. More recently he has been helping the NBA D-league's Texas Legends get into the playoffs.

I'm not sure what's more troubling about this story: The fact that the 76ers best option is a 36-year-old veteran who hasn't played in the NBA for two years, or that Doug Collins thinks so little of Evan Turner that he wouldn't give those minutes to him.

Either way it's a huge disappointment for this Sixers team that has really turned things around over the second half of the season.

Here's hoping for a speedy recovery for Lou Williams, because this team will need him if they hope to pull off a pLayOff Upset (see what I did there? Full-circle for my cleverness).
