Carmelo Anthony to the Knicks; Why NBA Superteams Are Good for the NBA

Robert CotterFeb 28, 2011

Carmelo Anthony forcing his way to the New York Knicks made me mad. Actually it made me furious as another NBA superstar had forced his way to a major market to team up with another basketball “super friend.”

I planned on this blog entry being an angry, yet insightful rant on the NBA, its super stars and the danger of these super teams for the NBA’s success.

Then in the span of four days, I saw Bulls-Heat and Heat-Knicks. Suddenly everything was OK in my NBA world. In fact I don’t think I’ve ever been happier.

These super teams have created must watch TV. Watching Knicks-Heat, I was glued to my futon with hot wings in hand as four of the top 10 players in the world played in a game we could only dream about last year.

Seeing Melo and his smooth jump shot, LeBron and his ferocious dunks, Wade and his Flash-like speed and Amare and his paint domination made me a happy basketball fan.

I know that morally I should feel some resentment towards all this. The “little guy” is losing his chance to compete in today’s NBA.

Teams such as the Nuggets, Raptors and Cavaliers are all trapped in the dungeon of NBA hell as a result of their stars jettisoning them for bigger cities, but as an NBA fan there is too much personal enjoyment for me to gain from all this.

Rivalries are back. In an NBA climate that had been lacking any true rivalries for more than a decade, these super teams have become the energy needed to create new and intense rivalries.

Lakers-Heat, Knicks-Bulls, Bulls-Heat, Knicks-Heat, Celtics-Heat,and Knicks-Celtics have all breathed fresh air into a tired league of old historic rivalries with no true meaning today.

So tell me, are you really going to miss the great combination of Carmelo Anthony and Chris “Birdman” Anderson in Denver or the storied tandem of LeBron James and Mo Williams?

Sit back, relax and enjoy what could be a golden age of basketball.
