Jimmer Fredette and BYU Silence 'The Show' at San Diego State

Jeff HansenFeb 26, 2011

It was arguably the most highly anticipated game in Mountain West Conference history when No. 7 BYU and No. 4 San Diego State met in San Diego. In front of a sold out, and very hostile, Aztec crowd, Jimmer Fredette and the Cougars were able to pull out an 80-67 victory.

Earlier this week, I wrote an article explaining what I thought BYU would have to do in order to get the road win.

The three keys to the game were:

1) Control Kawhi Leonard on the offensive glass.

2) Fredette would have to take care of the basketball better than he had in recent games and make a few more open shots.

3) Shut down San Diego State point guard DJ Gay.

Game Summary:

1) Kawhi Leonard: 17 points 13 rebounds

2) Jimmer Fredette: 25 points, nine assists, four turnovers

3) DJ Gay: six points, three assists on just 2-of-7 shooting

BYU took care of business and thus, they won the game.

Fredette didn't do it alone; BYU had a giant output from their supporting cast.

It would be hard to say Fredette wasn't the player of the game, but if it the award was to go to someone else, Charles Abouo would be the recipient.

Abouo had the assignment of guarding Leonard and he managed to hold his own against the future NBA player. Abouo also scored 18 points on 4-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc.

As a team, BYU shot 14-of-24 from three and that proved to be the difference.

BYU has beat San Diego State twice now, their only two losses on the season. One could say that BYU just has their number, but I have to believe that BYU is the better team.

How far is this Cougar team going to be able to go?

Behind the leadership of Jimmer Fredette, BYU is poised to make a deep run into the NCAA tournament this year.
