Chicago Bulls: Will Rasual Butler Tidy Up Team for Playoff Run?
The Chicago Bulls continue to look for the right fit for their shooting guard situation and the latest name to surface is Rasual Butler, currently of the Los Angeles Clippers.
Butler brings the right combination of respectable defense and long-range shooting the Bulls have been looking for to complement their MVP candidate, Derrick Rose.
Yahoo Sports is reporting, "Butler is hoping for a fresh start after playing sparingly for the Clippers this season, a league source said. The Celtics, Chicago Bulls and Nets are interested in the long-range shooter. Butler is making $2.4 million in the final year of his contract."
That price tag makes a possibility that the Bulls—if the Clippers are willing—could acquire Butler for James Johnson and a draft pick.
After a very successful stint in the D-League, Johnson rejoined the team after they completed their last road trip. It's a stint that might have re-established his trade value.
Butler has received little playing time this season, but in his two starts he averaged 14 points and five rebounds, while shooting 38 percent from behind the arc.
Of his defense Hollinger says, "Butler is an NBA rarity—a middling athlete who still manages to be a good defender. He's long and competes, and he doesn't make mistakes or gamble. In fact, he had the lowest rate of steals per minute at his position."
The Bulls have been holding the position that they are looking to make a move, but not one that is going to threaten team chemistry.
While there's been a lot of hope from Bulls fans that they might make a move for the likes of J.R. Smith or O.J. Mayo, there's little likelihood that they'll be moving in that direction.
"What we would be looking for as this trade deadline approaches is a little more scoring if we can find it, but we aren't going to do anything to disrupt the chemistry of this team," Paxson said Friday on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000.
"We've made huge strides this year, and we still think our best basketball is yet to come."
Butler may provide the best opportunity to add what the Bulls are looking for—in essence, a shooting guard who can shoot and guard, without sacrificing the great team chemistry the Bulls have already developed this season.
They don't have a mess to fix—just a little tidying up—and the Butler may be the best man for the job.
