NBA All-Stars: Why Derrick Rose, Chris Paul, and D-Williams Are Not The Best PGs

George MangumFeb 19, 2011

So, it's All-Star Weekend in the NBA, and I'm hangin' with my boys at the school.

We're talking (actually arguing) about stuff, and I look at K.J. and say, "Listen, bruh, bruh. Would you rather have a player who scores lots of points or one who scores lots of rings?"

Without hesitating, K.J., the Laker honk, who normally disagrees with me, says, "Yeah. You right, Mangum. I'd take the one who wins."

BAM! So, after gloating for a moment, K.J. and I went back to practicing our own dance version of the West Coast Dougie and singing along with the songs on 99.1 KGGI (but that's not the point, so keep reading).

"What is this amazingly-written post all about?" you must be asking.

Check it out. About three weeks ago, I read in the L.A. Times where Chris Paul (New Orleans Hornets), Deron Williams (Utah Jazz), and Derrick Rose (Chicago Bulls) were reported to be the NBA's best point guards because of their "talent," whatever that is.

I shook my head in disbelief, and felt sorry for these "experts" who really believe this.

The "experts" believe that if a player in the NBA is named an All-Star, can do some flashy stuff, get a cheap video highlight on TV, or achieve some great stats, that they must be "talented" and are automatically the best at their positions, which Paul, Williams, and Rose are not.

The best point guards in the NBA are the ones whose talent is winning championship rings, and not anything else. And, the last time I looked, these "Three Besties" have combined for, oh, zeeeeeero championships.

Now, why is it that K.J., a mere pup at 17 years old, knows this and the "experts" don't? Freaky.

You need to know this before you bust out a response to me (yeah, I wish).

I've been a fan of the Bulls since the days of Bob "The Butterbean" Love, Chet "The Jet" Walker, "Stormin'" Norman Van Lier, and Jerry Sloan. So, you gotta know that I have a big fat crush on D Rose (so-to-speak) and have nothing but mad love for the brother.

But, just because he does what he does, it doesn't mean he's one of the three best point guards in the NBA. Rings are the thing.

Who are the three best? I'm glad you asked.

The three best point guards in the NBA are the ones who have led their teams to championships, and these are the ones K.J. and I would pick first for our teams if we had one.

Those guards are Tony Parker (Spurs), Rajon Rondo (Celtics), and Chauncey Billups(Nuggets). Their championship numbers? Like, six? BAM!

Before we move on, I cannot list Kobe or D-Fish out in La La Land as the best point guards. They run that freaking triangle offense, so who knows who the point guard even is.

However, they would be No. 1 and 2 if they qualified. Dig? Let's move on, shan't we?

These three, throughout their careers, have put their teams in position to contend (not just compete) for championships.

The others get great pub and stuff, but, in a championship game, you would take Chris Paul over Chauncey Billups? Uh, OK. You lose. Paul's flashiness on the court certainly doesn't outshine the flashiness of Billups' rings.

Yah, you're getting it now, aren't you?

Just simmer down and think for a moment. The Celts and and Spurs are on a collision course for an NBA Championship series, and Billups is the only thing that keeps that goofy group in Denver going.

Those who understand winning know that the best point guards in the NBA right now (and always) are the ones whose "talent" is giving their teams the chance to win, and Tony Parker and Rajon Rondo do just that.

And, again, I would like my chances to win with Chauncey Billups any day over The Rose and Deron Williams. Nothing personal, amigo, but true.

I will admit, though, that Derrick Rose is the closest of the three to becoming a member of an exclusive fraternity led by Parker, Rondo, and Billups. The fraternity's name? Oh, it's Phi Ima Winna. BAM!

Hey, I'm not belittling these things the guys do. Heck, they're NBA All-Stars, which is an unbelievable accomplishment, fo sho.

However, these three can never be considered the three best point guards in the NBA just because of their styles, stats, or popularity. To be one of the best point guards, they need to make it a "point" to win a championship (I crack myself up). Feelin' me?

Now, I have to get back to consoling K.J. about the Lakers losing to the Cavaliers this week.

I reminded the poor little fella that Byron Scott was a winner, and that Coach B. and the Cavs must have been some of the 18 readers of my post last weekend, thus the Lakers were "sitting Lucks," er "sitting ducks" ( 18 readers? how embarrassing).

K.J. told me that I was too good at teaching others about winning, to which I agreed.

Oh, and by the way. When Rose and the boys beat the Spurs in seven for the crown this year, then he''ll be one of the three best PG's in the game. BAM!

I'm out.
