NBA Trade Rumors: Deadline Deals for All Playoff Contenders to Bolster Roster

Brandon GalvinJun 7, 2018

NBA All-Star Weekend is finally here. As we lay back, relax and enjoy all of the great festivities, we will also be constantly speculating trade deadline deals as the deadline quickly approaches at the end of the month.

The entire weekend will be dedicated to Blake Griffin, the Lakers’ struggles and the Carmelo Anthony trade rumors, better known as “Carmelodrama.”

Anthony is clearly the best single piece on the open trade market, but there are players around the league who can not only secure playoff positions, but Championship dreams as well.

For the top 10 teams in each conference looking to secure their spot in the postseason, here are three potential deadline deals to make franchises and fans sleep easier at night heading to the postseason.

Milwaukee Bucks

1. Milwaukee Receives: Antawn Jamison, Daniel Gibson

Cleveland Receives: Michael Redd

Milwaukee needs depth. Gibson represents a great, explosive, three-point scoring option off the bench. Gibson would be able to provide a huge spark off the bench heading into the postseason. If Gibson can get hot, he is almost unstoppable from behind the arc. Jamison is a crafty veteran stuck in obscurity right now. He needs to get on a team in need of a big man who can score and Milwaukee is that team.

2. Milwaukee Receives: JR Smith, Chris Anderson, Al Harrington

Denver Receives: Michael Redd

Denver is able to shed a ton of cap space heading into the offseason. Milwaukee takes on two poor contracts, but all three incoming players would greatly help the Bucks to solidify a postseason spot. Anderson is a great defensive player and Harrington is a big body who can stretch the floor. Smith is an explosive spark off the bench who can attack the rim and score from behind the three-point line.

More importantly, the Bucks trade Redd, who isn’t helping the team, for three pieces who will.

3. Milwaukee Receives: Richard Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince

Detroit Receives: Michael Redd, Carlos Delfino

Joe Dumars unloads his two unhappy veterans and makes cap room for the future.

Milwaukee receives two veterans who know what it takes to win. They make the Bucks far more complete on both sides of the ball. The Bucks add depth in the process.

Phoenix Suns

1. Phoenix Receives: Gerald Wallace, Stephen Jackson

Charlotte Receives: Vince Carter

Charlotte receives a marquee player, despite an aging one. Carter still has some draw in this league and should put more butts in the Bobcats’ seats.

Phoenix adds much needed veteran depth, and players who can actually play! Jackson and Wallace add offense, defense and toughness to this team. Watch them excel on the wings with Steve Nash.

2. Phoenix Receives: Zach Randolph, OJ Mayo

Memphis Receives: Channing Frye, Hakeem Warrick, Josh Childress, Mickael Pietrus

Phoenix adds a big time scorer with Randolph up front, and his contract expires, double score! OJ Mayo will be a monster on the wing with Nash passing him the rock. Mayo will be the future in Phoenix.

Memphis receives depth across the board.

3. Phoenix Receives: Luol Deng, Kyle Korver, CJ Watson

Chicago Receives: Vince Carter, Mickael Pietrus

Phoenix acquires a slasher for Nash in Luol Deng. Perhaps even more important, he acquires a great wingman in Kyle Korver, who will be able to spot up behind the arc and consistently knock down treys.

Chicago receives Vince Carter, a crafty veteran who can create his own shot. They also acquire Pietrus, who is a quality defender at the small forward position.

Charlotte Bobcats

3 of 20
CHICAGO, IL - FEBRUARY 15: Former players Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen of the Chicago Bulls watch a game between the Bulls and the Charlotte Bobcats at the United Center on February 15, 2011 in Chicago, Illinois. The Bulls defeated the Bobcats 106-94

1. Charlotte Receives: Jonny Flynn, Corey Brewer

Memphis Receives: Stephen Jackson

The Bobcats receive young depth in this trade. Flynn is an explosive piece off the bench who can also handle point guard duties. Brewer has not developed into a very good player, but he is a solid one who can play defense.

For a veteran piece with a three-year contract, the Bobcats make out pretty nicely.

2. Charlotte Receives: Kevin Martin

Houston Receives: Gerald Wallace

Charlotte desperately needs offense. Kevin Martin is one of the better shooting guards in the game and will provide an instant spark for Michael Jordan’s Bobcats. Charlotte has the size up front to balance the loss of Wallace and his rebounding skills and defensive prowess. When K-Mart is raining threes at wholesale prices, nobody will care.

Houston gets depth up front, which they need, and shed money in the long run. After this season, Houston will be able to use Wallace’s expiring contract as a trade bargaining chip.

3. Charlotte Receives: Carmelo Anthony, J.R. Smith, Al Harrington, Chris Anderson

Denver Receives: Stephen Jackson, Gerald Wallace, Boris Diaw, Nazr Mohammed

1. Memphis Receives: Gerald Wallace, Tyrus Thomas

Charlotte Receives: Zach Randolph

2. Memphis Receives: Nene Hilario, Chris Anderson

Denver Receives: Zach Randolph

Denver acquires another expiring contract to rebuild when Carmelo Anthony leaves them. Memphis receives much needed front court depth. Nene can step in right away at center and Anderson will come off the bench to provide a ton of explosive defense.

3. Memphis Receives: Wilson Chandler, Kelenna Azubuike, Anthony Randolph

New York Receives: OJ Mayo, Hasheem Thabeet

New York receives offense and defense in this trade, essential, for their Championship dreams.

The Grizzlies acquire a good young guard/forward in Chandler who can help Memphis while Rudy Gay recovers from injury. He can also stay in the lineup once Gay returns. Memphis can also evaluate the young players Auzubuike and Randolph and see if they would like to keep them around for the future.

1. Indiana Receives: Kevin Martin

Houston Receives: Mike Dunleavy

2. Indiana Receives: Chauncey Billups

Denver Receives: Mike Dunleavy

Denver is looking to shed contracts and Dunleavy, and his awesome $10 million expiring contract, comes off the books in the offseason.

Indiana, meanwhile, gets a veteran point guard they can depend on to push them into the postseason.

3. Indiana Receives: Antawn Jamison, Mo Williams

Cleveland Receives: Mike Dunleavy, TJ Ford

Cleveland receives two expiring contracts worth $19 million. Not bad considering they will shed a ton of cap space in the offseason.

Indiana receives a veteran point guard who should work well with Darren Collison. Also, the Pacers receive a very good veteran power forward in Jamison to round out the starting five. This team would be able to cement a playoff seed for the Pacers. The Pacers would also be able to use these pieces to build around for next season, or they could trade them away next year as Jamison and Williams only have two years left on their contracts, including this year.

1. Utah Receives: Rajon Rondo, Glen Davis, Nate Robinson, Von Wafer

Boston Receives: Deron Williams

Boston receives one of the best point guards in the league, yes, one better than even Rondo. Williams is a bigger body and will be able to exploit the other guards in the East while still competing against Derrick Rose.

Utah acquires young depth and still can boast a top point guard in the league.

2. Utah Receives: Richard Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince, Ben Wallace

Detroit Receives: Andrei Kirilenko, Francisco Elson, C.J. Miles

For further analysis, click here.

3. Utah Receives: Kevin Martin, Brad Miller

Houston Receives: Andrei Kirilenko

Houston receives its desired expiring $17 million contract.

Utah receives a huge upgrade at shooting guard. Next to Deron Williams, Martin is going to receive a lot of open shooting opportunities. He’ll salivate playing next to Williams. Brad Miller is a solid big man who will be a fine back up to Al Jefferson.

Philadelphia 76ers

1. Philadelphia Receives: Chris Kaman

Los Angeles Receives: Jason Kapono, Spencer Hawes

Elton Brandon and Chris Kaman have worked together successfully in the past. The 76ers desperately need a quality center up front to take pressure off Elton Brand. Kaman has the complete game and also only has two years left on his contract.

The 76ers are becoming an improving force in the Eastern Conference. With Kaman on board, they would solidify a playoff spot.

In return, Los Angeles receives two expiring contracts for a player they don’t even want.

2. Philadelphia Receives: Andris Biedrins

Golden State Receives: Spencer Hawes, Andres Nocioni

Nocioni at least is a gritty veteran for Golden State. Every now and then, he’ll drain a shot. Golden State at least is able to plug a solid center in for the loss of Biedrins. Most importantly, Golden State is relieved of Biedrins’ contracts.

Philly, in search of a defensive center, lands one of the better ones in the league. Biedrins can’t shoot worth a damn, and he is actually a terrible offensive piece. Still, the 76ers have the pieces around him to more than make up for that. As long as the 76ers get a defensive center heading into the postseason, they’re good to go.

3. Philadelphia Receives: Nene Hilario, Chris Anderson

Denver Receives: Spencer Hawes, Jason Kapono, Andres Nocioni

Philly receives the defensive front court presence it needs badly in Nene and the Birdman. Even better, Nene can actually score! In order to acquire Nene, Philly has to take on Anderson’s contract, but it’s not like the 76ers aren’t already locked into bad contracts anyways.

Denver receives the expiring contracts it desperately seeks after trading completely cleaning house. Nene isn’t going to stick around after next season, Denver might as well get their expiring pieces now during their firesale.

Denver Nuggets

1. Denver Receives: Stephen Jackson, Gerald Wallace

Charlotte Receives: JR Smith, Kenyon Martin

Charlotte receives two expiring contracts for their center pieces.

Denver receives two veterans who will make a huge difference to the overall makeup of this team for the next two seasons. Even if Anthony is traded away, the Nuggets should still make the playoffs. If Anthony stays, the Nuggets have a legitimate shot to go deep in the playoffs.

2. Denver Receives: Tayshaun Prince, Ben Gordon, Richard Hamilton

Detroit Receives: JR Smith, Kenyon Martin, Arron Afflalo, Shelden Williams, Melvin Ely, Anthony Carter

Denver builds a ton of depth with this deal as Joe Dumars sheds the books for the offseason. Denver acquires two legitimate scoring threats and an excellent defender in Prince. Even if ‘Melo walks in the offseason, the Nuggets still have solid pieces to compete.

3. Denver Receives: Antawn Jamison, Daniel Gibson

Cleveland Receives: Kenyon Martin

Cleveland is able to take back an expiring contract and shed cap space for this offseason as they look to rebuild following LeBron James’ departure.

Denver acquires another big man who can shoot while also obtaining Gibson who could be one of the best sixth men in the league. Watch Gibson provide an addition spark off the bench and light up the west.

New York Knicks

1. New York Receives: Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Nene Hilario, Chris Anderson, Anthony Carter

Denver Receives: Raymond Felton, Wilson Chandler, Eddy Curry. Timofey Mozgov, Ronny Turiaf, Anthony Randolph, Kelenna Azubuike, Roger Mason, Toney Douglas, Shawne Williams, Billl Walker, First-Round Draft Pick

This trade gives the Knicks its most complete team.

For more ‘Melo to the Knicks scenarios and analysis, click here.

2. New York Receives: Stephen Jackson, Gerald Wallace

Charlotte Receives: Eddy Curry, Anthony Randolph Kelenna Azubuike, Toney Douglas

Charlotte appears ready to move on from S-Jax. Curry and Azubuike come off the books, while Douglas can come off the bench for the next two seasons.

The most important thing here is that the Knicks gain two great veteran presences, who are also all-around very good and underrated players. Jackson and Wallace are gritty players who will fit in very well with the New York attitude. The Knicks really need more defense in the starting lineup without losing offense and Jackson is a perfect fit. Wallace is going to rebound the heck out of the ball. The Knicks need players who will do the dirty work. Wallace and Jackson have shown in the past that they are willing to do so. More importantly, the Knicks don’t have to surrender their core talent of the future.

3. New York Receives: Chris Kaman

Los Angeles Receives: Eddy Curry

Los Angeles doesn’t want Chris Kaman. Now that DeAndre Jordan is emerging, they can get rid of Kaman without having to sweat about it. Curry’s contract comes off the books so the Clippers receive cap space for the offseason. Kaman gives the Knicks a legitimate center who can rebound, defend and score.

New Orleans Hornets

1. New Orleans Receives: Luol Deng

Chicago Receives: Trevor Ariza, Jarrett Jack

New Orleans receives an offensive upgrade at small forward. Chris Paul will see to it that Deng has the easiest shots he’s seen in his entire career.

Chicago receives a good defensive forward and a backup point guard to Derrick Rose.

2. New Orleans Receives: Andre Iguodala

Philadelphia Receives: Trevor Ariza, Marcus Thornton, Marcus Banks

For further analysis, click here.

3. New Orleans Receives: OJ Mayo

Memphis Receives: Willie Green

Green is a solid veteran and has an expiring contract. New Orleans receives an upgrade at the shooting guard position. Mayo is a pure shooter and with Paul creating the shots, the Mayo will be easy flowing.

Atlanta Hawks

1. Atlanta Receives: Gerald Wallace

Charlotte Receives: Jamal Crawford

Charlotte receives added offense while the Hawks heavily upgrade its rebounding and defense up front. The Hawks’ front court would be tough to handle in the playoffs with Horford, Josh Smith and Wallace crashing the boards.

2. Atlanta Receives: Steve Nash, Grant Hill

Phoenix Receives: Mike Bibby, Jamal Crawford

Phoenix receives a $10 million expiring contract in Crawford, while still receiving a capable point guard in Bibby.

Atlanta may seem like they’re giving up depth here since Crawford is removed as the sixth man, but Nash has a nonstop motor and will more than make up for Crawford’s loss with his own remarkable passing ability and shooting touch. Nash could have the Hawks a legitimate threat. Also, watch Joe Johnson’s numbers explode again like they did in Phoenix.

3. Atlanta Receives: Monta Ellis, Andris Biedrins

Golden State Receives: Jamal Crawford, Zaza Pachulia, Maurice Evans

Atlanta receives far improved depth here. Ellis has a shot, but more importantly, will drive to the basket. Ellis loves to attack the rim and bigger defenders. Crawford has been a clutch shooter throughout his career, but his volume of shots is completely unnecessary. Biedrins adds much needed defensive depth to the front court heading into the playoffs.

Golden State rids itself of two regrettable contracts.

Portland Trail Blazers

1. Portland Receives: Gerald Wallace

Charlotte Receives: Joel Przybilla, Rudy Fernandez

Charlotte cuts cap space for next season as Przybilla comes off the books. Fernandez is a very good player and will be a great role player for Charlotte.

The Trail Blazers get much needed help at the forward position as far as rebounding and defense goes. Portland builds a fine front court heading into the playoffs.

2. Portland Receives: Deron Williams

Utah Receives: Andre Miller, Nicolas Batum, Joel Przybilla

After Jerry Sloan resigned, Williams could be the next to go, believe it or not. Utah would still get a big, quality point guard, a future small forward and an expiring contract.

Portland, needless to say, would have one of the best back courts in the league with Roy and Deron.

3. Portland Receives: Luol Deng, Ronnie Brewer, Kurt Thomas, Brian Scalabrine

Chicago Receives: Brandon Roy, Joel Przybilla, Dante Cunningham

The Trail Blazers ship off Brandon Roy, refusing to deal with his knee injuries any further. Luol Deng, Ronnie Brewer and Kurt Thomas come in to add a ton of depth to the Trail Blazers’ roster.

The Bulls create one of the best young back courts with Roy and Derrick Rose.

Orlando Magic

Phoenix Receives: Jameer Nelson, Brandon Bass

2. Los Angeles Receives: Jameer Nelson, Quentin Richardson, Malik Allen

Orlando Magic Receives: Baron Davis

Los Angeles gets rid of Baron Davis, who they seem to hate. Davis has failed to live up to his expectations, but a highly motivated Baron Davis can be one of the best players in the game as we saw in Golden State.

3. Orlando Receives: Rodney Stuckey, Chris Wilcox, Tracy McGrady

Detroit Receives: Jameer Nelson

Orlando adds much needed depth to their roster. Wilcox comes off the bench to give size while Stuckey or McGrady can rotate starting the point for the Magic. Stuckey has explosive talent and will attack the basket, while McGrady can still hit an open shot or two.

Los Angeles Receives: Jeff Green, Daequan Cook, Morris Peterson

For further analysis, click here.

2. Oklahoma City Receives: Gerald Wallace, Nazr Mohammed

Charlotte Receives: Morris Peterson, Nenad Krstic, Daequan Cook

Michael Jordan receives a ton of cap space for the offseason. The Thunder get much needed front court defense and rebounding heading into the postseason. This is the type of trade that could actually set the Thunder apart from the rest of the West coast teams stuck in the middle of the pack.

3. Oklahoma City Receives: Andris Biedrins

Golden State Receives: Morris Peterson, Cole Aldrich

Golden State rids itself of Biedrins’ contract and gets an expiring in Mo Pete and another center to fill in.

The Thunder receives a much needed defensive center in Biedrins. They have to sacrifice by taking on his pathetic contract, but he’ll help them advance further in the playoffs than Peterson and Aldrich would.

Chicago Bulls

1. Chicago Bulls Receive: Stephen Jackson

Charlotte Receives: Ronnie Brewer, James Johnson, Brian Scalabrine

The Bulls receive a fantastic veteran guard who will add defense and intensity to the starting lineup.

The Bobcats receive two young players and an expiring contract. Brewer can still develop into a better player in the future for Charlotte.

2. Chicago Receives: Andre Iguodala

Philadelphia Receives: Ronnie Brewer, Kyle Korver

Chicago receives an all-around great player and potential triple-double threat each night.

Philadelphia receives two good players to add depth to the team.

3. Chicago Receives: Carmelo Anthony, O.J. Mayo, Chris Anderson

Denver Receives: Zach Randolph, Hasheem Thabeet, Ronnie Brewer

Memphis Receives: Luol Deng, Taj Gibson, Kyle Korver, Al Harrington

*Bonus Bulls Deal*

Chicago Receives: OJ Mayo

Memphis Receives: Ronnie Brewer

Mayo is a better scorer than Brewer and could start immediately in Chicago, who is in need of a shooting guard.

Ronnie Brewer is a fine young player wouldn’t cause any headaches in Memphis.

Los Angeles Lakers

Orlando Receives: Andrew Bynum, Lamar Odom, Steve Blake, Theo Ratliff

2. Los Angeles Receive: Stephen Jackson

Charlotte Receives: Ron Artest, Devin Ebanks

The Lakers receive a great veteran presence, who can defend and shoot in Stephen Jackson. Jackson may actually be a better fit for this Lakers team now. The Lakers also rid themselves of the headaches that Ron Artest must inflict on the rest of the organization. Jackson will feel the adrenaline playing for a great team once again, and as we saw in Golden State, the man can ball.

Jordan receives Artest, who may be a headache, but with Gerald Wallace and Tyrus Thomas on the team already, the Bobcats have one of the best defensive starting lineups in the game.

3. Los Angeles Receives: Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups

Denver Receives: Andrew Bynum, Ron Artest, Steve Blake, Devin Ebanks

The Lakers receiver the heir to Kobe’s throne in ‘Melo. Billups steps in as an upgrade over Derrick Fisher, but at least Fisher will be one of the best backups in the game. With Kobe, Carmelo, Billups and Fisher, the Lakers would have four clutch shooters on the roster.

Denver receives their big man of the future and a small forward replacement in Artest.

Miami receives a veteran big who can move around better than “Big Z” and has good shooting touch.

3. Nobody else would want to trade with Miami…

Dallas Mavericks

1. Dallas Receives: Stephen Jackson, Gerald Wallace

Charlotte Receives: Caron Butler, DeShawn Stevenson, Brian Cardinal

The Mavericks receive perhaps the most depth they could possibly receive in any deal. Wallace and Jackson are a great veteran duo who could come in and do exactly everything the Mavericks need. They would bring in excellent defense, rebounding and offensive ability. The Mavericks may just secure a Championship if they could acquire Jackson and Wallace.

Michael Jordan receives expiring contracts for his veteran duo.

2. Dallas Receives: Chris Kaman

Los Angeles Receives: Caron Butler

Dallas acquires another center, which they’ll need as they enter the postseason. Kaman does everything Dallas needs up front and at least knows what it takes to defend the other bigs in the west already.

Los Angeles rids themselves of Kaman’s contract and clears up cap space in the offseason.

3. Dallas Receives: Samuel Dalembert

Sacramento Receives: Caron Butler, Brian Cardinal

These teams swap expiring contracts. Sacramento is done for the season anyways and have no need for Dalembert. The Mavericks need another big man before entering the postseason, if you noticed the theme of their trade proposals. Dalembert is a very good defensive center, giving the Mavericks two heading into the playoffs.

1. Boston Receives: OJ Mayo and Hasheem Thabeet

Memphis Receives: Nate Robinson and Jermaine O’Neal

An easy swap straight-up, two-for-two swap here. Robinson does everything the Grizzlies want from their sixth man. He comes with less baggage although he’s not the brightest player and can be a headache at times. At least Robinson knows though that he isn’t the man. He’s not accustomed to being the role player.

Mayo’s time in Memphis has run its course and he desperately needs a change of scenery. With Boston, he’ll be able to mature. The Celtics get a better shooter off the bench in the process, and one who has some superstar potential hidden inside. Mayo would excel on this veteran team.

Thabeet has been labeled a bust in Memphis and the Grizzlies do not seem to have any intention to let Thabeet remedy this reputation. Swap O’Neal in and add front court depth to the roster heading into the Western Conference playoffs.

Boston receives a young, defensive-minded player that they will need down the stretch in the playoffs. Working with Kevin Garnett, Kendrick Perkins and Shaquille O’Neal, we just may see that defensive prowess put to great use immediately.

2. Boston Receives: Tayshaun Prince, Ben Wallace, Tracy McGrady

Detroit Receives: Nate Robinson, Marquis Daniels, Glen Davis, Von Wafer, Deltonte West

The Celtics add a ton of veteran depth here. Prince and Wallace are still great defenders at their position. Off the bench, McGrady will be able to add some offense and can handle the point position when Rondo needs relief.

Detroit ponies up on the firesale and adds Robinson to the back court for at least another year. The rest come off the books for Joe Dumars.

3. Boston Receives: Brad Miller

Houston Receives: Marquis Daniels, Delonte West, Von Wafer

Houston relinquishes its bind on a three-year deal with Brad Miller in exchange for cap room following the season.

Boston receives a big man with very good touch heading into the playoffs. Although they lose some depth on the bench, Miller’s size and shooting ability more than makes up for the loss of bodies on the bench heading into the postseason.

4. Boston Receives: Stephen Jackson, Tony Allen, Leon Powe

Cleveland Receives: O.J. Mayo, Hasheem Thabeet

Memphis Receives: Daniel Gibson, Jermaine O’Neal

Charlotte Receives: Nate Robinson, Jamario Moon

This trade scenario is the best one for the Celtics. They add veteran presence across the board and immensely bolster the bench. Jackson is one of the most underrated players in the league

5. Boston Receives: Chris Kaman

Los Angeles Clippers Receive: Jermaine O’Neal, Marquis Daniels, Avery Bradley

Does Los Angeles even want Kaman anymore? I think not. They would be able to shed cap space following the season.

Boston receives a legit center they can plug in off the bench. With Perkins, Kaman and Shaq on the roster, the Celtics would be continuously fresh to battle the rest of the bigs in the playoffs.

1. San Antonio Receives: Stephen Jackson

Charlotte Receives: O.J. Mayo, Tony Allen

Memphis Receives: Richard Jefferson

2. San Antonio Receives: Tayshaun Prince

Detroit Receives: Richard Jefferson, Tiago Splitter, Gary Neal

Richard Jefferson hasn’t been what the Spurs thought he would be. I could have told them that after watching him for so long in New Jersey. Tayshaun Prince does everything the Spurs need. He’s an efficient shooter but most important, is a fantastic defender who will be invaluable throughout the postseason.

In order to swap Jefferson for Prince, the Spurs need to give up two potentially good young pieces.

Hey, if it secures a Championship, so be it.

3. San Antonio Receives: Antawn Jamison

Cleveland Receives: Richard Jefferson, Tiago Splitter

The Spurs need a more consistent offensive force, which Jefferson has not provided. Jamison at least is a big man, although he doesn’t exactly play like one.

Cleveland at least saves a bit of cap space for next year and can evaluate Splitter as they see fit.
