Jimmer Fredette, BYU Basketball Sensation, Has Nation's Attention

Brian LendinoFeb 17, 2011

Quick: How many adjectives can you think of to describe Jimmer Fredette on a basketball court?

Here's a few: silky, smooth, silky-smooth, cold-blooded, clutch, dominant.

Fact is, Jimmer Fredette very well may be the country's best scorer and purest shooter. His range has no limits, and he has absolutely no conscience when shooting. The entire West Coast has Jimmer-mania!

Fredette, who was ranked as a 2- and 3-star recruit by scouting services, is now the NCAA's leading scorer with a whopping 27.3 points per game.

But that wasn’t always the case. The 6'2" point guard hails from the fine town of Great Falls, New York. Ever since his early years, Jimmer has been around a basketball court. Unfortunately, this upbringing didn’t directly translate to success in collegiate ranks. Despite being the sixth-highest scorer in the state of New York’s history, Fredette only received two Division-I basketball scholarships—Siena and BYU.

His presence is undeniable. Jimmer Fredette is easily the most dangerous college basketball player in the country.

He becomes even more dangerous because he wants the ball in his hands in crunch time, as was shown on November 27 against Saint Mary's. Jimmer hit the go-ahead three-pointer with 10 seconds remaining.

Truth is, he has eight 30-plus point games on the season, and there is no player I'd rather have with the clock running thin.

It would truly be a shame to see this guy’s career be over, and there are mixed reviews on how well his game will translate to the NBA. His defense may lack in lateral speed and he may not be able to play above the rim (which is almost a must in the NBA), but his shot and his creativeness on offense make him a risk worth taking.

Some experts have made comparisons to Golden State Warrior guard Stephen Curry, and the comparisons are true.

In my humble opinion, the best scorer in the NCAA deserves to be drafted in the first round. He could even be picked in the lottery, perhaps to the Phoenix Suns or Utah Jazz should those teams miss the playoffs.

Either way, the memories that Jimmer Fredette left us will never be forgotten.
