Derrick Rose, Rajon Rondo and the Top 25 Dimes of the Season So Far
It is really incredible to see just how good point guard play has gotten. Dimes have really taken a leap this year and that could be because of athletes like Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers and JaVale McGee of the Washington Wizards. They just make everyone look better. However, I think it is because of the smarts of the point guards currently in the league.
Rajon Rondo has made this season his personal assist show with the Boston Celtics and you can assume he will make this list. Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls is another guy that will undoubtedly make the list.
Here are the top 25 assists so far this season.
Let us know what you think. Was there anyone we left out?
25. Manu Ginobili To Tim Duncan
1 of 25Not a bad one here, although it does show just how the Spurs are showing their age. A few years ago, Manu probably would have tried to dunk this.
Tim Duncan also is showing his age. If he had gotten this pass a few years ago, he would have dunked this.
24. Steve Nash To Marcin Gortat
2 of 25Steve Nash has dropped off a bit this year because of the departure of Amare Stoudemire, but he still has had some moments this season. Nash is second in the NBA in assists and one of only two guys to average over 10 assists per game this year.
This play is a nice drive and dish. Nothing too special, but it does show Nash's natural ability to get to the bucket and find the open guy.
23. Jason Kidd To Tyson Chandler
3 of 25Jason Kidd is another point guard that has lost a step this year, but he still can show flashes of the play-making ability that made him a fan favorite over the years.
This play is vintage Kidd. When the Mavericks acquired Tyson Chandler, I am sure this is what they had in mind. Kidd can really just throw the ball anywhere towards the bucket and Chandler can throw it in.
22. Derrick Rose To Joakim Noah
4 of 25The thing that I really like about Derrick Rose, aside from his explosion off the ground, is that he can really fire his passes all over the place.
This is the perfect example of just how fast Rose's passes are. Dribbles down the middle, then "boom" – ball finds the open man for a hoop.
21. LeBron James To Dwyane Wade
5 of 25When the Miami Heat announced the signings of LeBron James and Chris Bosh along with the re-signing of Dwyane Wade, I think this is what they had in mind.
These guys have been making plays like this their entire careers, and now they make them together.
20. Baron Davis To DeAndre Jordan
6 of 25DeAndre Jordan does not get enough credit. He has made a great leap this year because of a number of things; mostly more minutes and playing alongside one of the best power forwards in the NBA. But he has also been making great plays this year for the Clippers.
Baron Davis has got to be loving the athleticism around him. Having guys like Jordan allows him to find the open man streaking to the basket as opposed to being the guy to drive to the hoop and get beat up once he gets there.
19. Jrue Holiday To Andre Iguodala
7 of 25Jrue Holiday is another guy that doesn't get enough credit. He played out of position at UCLA and suffered for it. Now that he gets to have the ball in his hands, he is able to make plays and use his basketball IQ.
This play is good because of the steal as well as the ally-oop. Holiday will be making plays for some time to come.
18. Rajon Rondo To Shaquille O'Neal
8 of 25I know this one was in the preseason, but it is just an example of what it could have been like to see Rajon Rondo play with Shaq in his prime. It would have been amazing to see what both Shaq and Rondo could have done playing together.
It is a shame to see just how far Shaq has declined though. When he jumps, he barely gets off the ground.
17. Steve Nash To Brook Lopez
9 of 25Finally, an around-the-back pass and who better to show us how it's done than Steve Nash. I know Nash didn't invent the around-the-back pass, but he may be the one that has perfected it.
The only thing that would have made this better was the Brook Lopez part. If someone more high-flying had been the one to throw it down, it would have made this play amazing.
16. Andray Blatche To JaVale McGee
10 of 25This is impressive. First, wunderkind John Wall throws a lob to Andray Blatche, who then sends a tip-pass to JaVale McGee for the thunderous dunk.
I am excited to see when John Wall really starts to make an impact on the league. It hasn't been this year, but I think he will be among the best point guards in the NBA very soon.
15. Russell Westbrook To Kevin Durant
11 of 25Russell Westbrook has been known as more of a "shoot first" point guard so far in his NBA career, but in this one he gets a chance to show off his passing abilities. It probably helps to have the best scorer in the NBA playing along side him.
It's amazing to me just how easy Durant makes plays like this look.
14. Stephen Curry To Dorell Wright
12 of 25This one is impressive, no bones about it.
When Stephen Curry was drafted, I didn't think he would be much of a point guard. I thought he would end up being an undersized shooting guard who needed a big and strong point guard to play alongside.
However, this play just shows off his basketball IQ and ability to pass the ball.
13. Baron Davis To Blake Griffin
13 of 25Blake Griffin must just make life easier for his teammates. His athleticism is unreal and he is a threat to go up for a lob any time.
Baron Davis has to love it.
12. Chris Paul To Marco Belinelli
14 of 25Chris Paul is amazing. Even when he is clearly not playing at 100 percent, he is able to make smart plays that make his teammates look good.
This is the perfect example of just what Paul can do.
11. Lamar Odom To Pau Gasol
15 of 25Lamar Odom is one of the most skilled big men in the NBA, but he rarely gets a chance to show it. Every once in a while, he will make a play like this one that makes every Laker fan scratch their head wondering why Odom doesn't do that more often.
It does help that Odom has other guys that are bigger than him who can help share the load down low.
10. Zabian Dowdell To Hakim Warrick
16 of 25Many people will be asking themselves, "Who the heck is Zabian Dowdell?" Well, if that is the case, then allow this to be the introduction to the former Virginia Tech Hokie.
Dowdell is probably not going to be the replacement for Steve Nash, but he could be a nice backup guard if he continues to make plays like this one.
9. Gilbert Arenas To John Wall
17 of 25Oh, what could have been if Gilbert Arenas had not been traded to the Orlando Magic.
This play will have to mark the short history of John Wall and Arenas' playing days together. Not a bad memory if you ask me.
8. Dwyane Wade To LeBron James
18 of 25The thing that makes this play worthwhile is the reaction of Dwyane Wade after he gives up the ball to LeBron James. He immediately knew that his play was a legit one because as soon as he let go of the ball, he raised his hands in celebration.
While I am not a fan of the Heat, they are entertaining when they run like this.
7. Derrick Rose To Ronnie Brewer
19 of 25Earlier, I talked about the quick release of Derrick Rose when he finds the open man. This is another perfect example of it.
I wouldn't be surprised to see him break a few of his receiver's fingers with one of those bullet passes.
6. Randy Foye To Blake Griffin
20 of 25See what I mean about Blake Griffin making life easier for his Clippers teammates? Randy Foye doesn't even need to cross half court to get an assist.
The amazing thing is that this is only Griffin's first year playing in the league. I just hope he remains healthy for the remainder of his career.
5. Luke Ridnour To Darko Milicic
21 of 25This one is incredible because of the fact that I didn't realize that Darko could dunk. Yes, I know he is a seven-footer, but come on – there is a lot we don't know about the former second overall pick.
Again, got to love the behind-the-back pass in this one. Makes it really nice, even if Darko traveled a little bit.
4. Earl Watson To Ronnie Price
22 of 25Earl Watson was my favorite player when he was in college at UCLA. He used to make incredible plays like this all the time, but I think this one is really impressive.
Anytime someone goes between the legs, it is really an awesome play. The flush by Ronnie Price is also impressive.
3. Matt Barnes and Derek Fisher To Pau Gasol
23 of 25This one is awesome because you get two-for-one.
First, there is the pass from Matt Barnes to Pau Gasol. It's nice in it's own right, but then there is the second one from Derek Fisher to Gasol to finish up. It must be nice to have someone like Gasol who has great hands around the basket.
2. Raymond Felton To Amare Stoudemire
24 of 25Raymond Felton has really made a nice impression in New York this year and this play just shows what kind of skill set the former North Carolina Tarheel has.
You have to love the half court bounce pass. Hard to do, but he makes it look so nice.
1. Rajon Rondo To Ray Allen
25 of 25This is by far the most impressive dime this year. Talk about eyes in the back of your head; I don't know how Rajon Rondo saw Ray Allen.
Rondo is gunning for the assist title this year and it's plays like this that set him apart from every other point guard in the NBA right now. The former Kentucky Wildcat is averaging 12.5 assists per game this year – that is nearly 1.5 more than anyone else in the league.
