Carmelo Anthony Trade Rumors: Are the Golden State Warriors Potential Suitors?

James PearsonFeb 1, 2011

Gone are the days when a team drafted a superstar and they stayed with that team through their prime career.

Michael Jordan on the Chicago Bulls. Magic Johnson as a Los Angeles Laker. Patrick Ewing as a member of the New York Knicks (remember when he wore a Seattle Supersonics uniform well past his prime? That was as awkward as a 40-year-old watching MTV’s Skins). Larry Bird on the Boston Celtics.

Heck, they even came up with the Bird exception just so they could keep him in Boston. How things have changed.

Now we have superstars holding teams for ransom, and there’s really nothing the teams can do about it. Carmelo Anthony is the latest player that has grown tired of the team that he has played for his whole career, and now he wants out.

He is even giving up potentially millions and millions of dollars depending on what transpires this summer in Denver.  Now it’s up to the teams to recruit Carmelo to come to their city and away from New York. What else can the Nuggets do but give him permission to talk to other teams so they don’t lose him for nothing and become the Cleveland Cavaliers of the West.

I’ve got the perfect team for Carmelo to come and play for—the Golden State Warriors—and here’s why:

With young emerging players, trading chips and 17 million dollars of expiring contracts, Golden State would be the perfect place for Carmelo to play ball. It’s a great basketball city, they need a superstar, they have the pieces in place to make many deals and more importantly, they need to make a change.

If there is any hope that Carmelo ends up a Warrior, he is going to have to request to play in Oakland, which in today’s NBA, would have to happen for him to come to the Bay. To push him to come, here is an open letter to Carmelo letting him know that Golden State is the best place to be for him.

This team as it is constructed, is not going to the playoffs. It’s just not going to happen. Monta Ellis and Stephen Curry are both great, but not together. They are like having all yellow birds in Angry Birds. Yeah, they're good, but they need something else to move on to the next level. They need a bomb bird, Carmelo; you are that bird.

The Warriors need a superstar.

The last one they had was—I can't even remember. They haven’t had an All-Star since 1997—Latrell Sprewell. Look how desperate they are, the Warriors last All-Star is more famous for choking his coach and turning down a 30 million dollar contract extension in the final year of a deal that was paying him 14 million dollars because he needed “to feed his family.”

That’s their last All-Star.

Oakland has one of the best fan bases in the entire league; however, they have made the playoffs only once since NBA Live ’95 came out. I was watching the Warriors play the Sacramento Kings last week and let’s be honest, it was most likely going to be a meaningless game.

Then the Warriors made a big late run to tie the game and eventually win it. The crowd was acting like they had just won a playoff game, how great is that? Sure, that’s about as close as they’ll get to a playoff game, but that’s how passionate the fans are.

Carmelo, how much fun would it be to play in front off a crowd like that? And with you in the Bay Area, these types of games might actually turn into playoff appearances.

They are a city that still loves Baron Davis for goodness sake. Imagine how much you would be loved if you lead them to the playoffs? They’d probably build a statue for you, and with you here, the new look Warriors would win a series or two—and possibly even an NBA Championship!

The Warriors can offer the Nuggets—Monta Ellis, Andris Biedrins, you wouldn’t like playing with him anyway and some expiring deals. You can also bring Chauncey Billups along with you if you want.

Imagine a team filled with you, Billups, Stephen Curry, Dorrell Wright, David Lee and maybe you could even inspire Brandon Wright to resemble an NBA player, he has the talent.

I’m getting excited just thinking about this.

Carmelo, I hope this reaches you. Please now request to play for the Warriors and make them a contender.

That or the Warriors stand pat and I keep playing Angry Birds every time the Warriors are on.
