Jimmer Fredette: How Far Can He Take The BYU Cougars?

Doug BrodessJan 27, 2011

Jimmer Fredette is on fire.

He has scored at least 40 points in three of his last four games. He can score from anywhere on the court; his range is unbelievable.

He is the nation's leading scorer or "the best scorer in the world," if you listen to NBA star Kevin Durant.

BYU is currently 20-1, 6-0 in the Mountain West and ranked No. 9.

After beating previously undefeated No. 4 San Diego State last night, the question becomes: How far can Fredette take the Cougars?

The answer to that question is: Pretty far.

The most recent example of a perimeter player like Fredette transporting his team deep in the tournament is Stephen Curry with Davidson.

In 2008, Curry was the nation's leading scorer from the guard position. He, too, had insane shooting range.

He took Davidson, a 10 seed, to the Regional finals, where the Wildcats lost to the top-seeded and eventual national champion Kansas Jayhawks, 59-57.

Curry's supporting cast was made up of solid role players, but Davidson's success was all about Curry.

So, how far can BYU go on Fredette's shoulders?

Fredette is just as competent of a shooter and scorer than Curry.

BYU may have a better supporting cast around Fredette.

And the Cougars have a better chance of entering the tournament with a better seeding.

BYU may run through the rest of their schedule without another loss and may enter the tournament with a one, two or three-seed.

If they do, watch out for the Cougars to make a serious run towards Reliant Stadium in Houston.
