Steve Nash Trade Rumors: 10 Reasons the Phoenix Suns Should Start Over
Steve Nash trade rumors have been on the back burner for most of the season, but as the Suns continue to watch their season slip away, it's time to re-examine Phoenix and figure out why the Suns should part with their franchise player.
Inside are 10 reasons why the Suns should move on from Steve Nash and just rebuild the entire thing. Any thoughts or comments? Make sure to leave them below.
No. 10: Retooling Hasn't Worked
1 of 10
For years, the Phoenix Suns have tried to add a piece here or a piece there to try and keep the success coming.
Now, it just hasn't worked. There are no titles to show for it and really, there's no other option left but to blow the whole thing up and start from scratch. If the Suns don't, they're only prolonging the misery of their fans.
Phoenix can get back to the top a lot faster if it just blows up this existing team.
No. 9: Too Many Swingmen
2 of 10
Take a look a Phoenix's roster and notice how many swingmen are on the roster.
There's Vince Carter, Mickael Pietrus, Josh Childress, Jared Dudley, Channing Frye and Hakim Warrick. The Suns have a stunning lack of versatility on the roster and there's a total log jam on the roster and it has to be fixed.
Blowing that group up could give the Suns more flexibility.
No. 8: No Defense
3 of 10
The Phoenix Suns were never a great defensive team, but with this team, you're going to need a few stops.
However, they haven't come, and the Suns are 29th in points allowed, which is a horrible mark and the team is full with players that have no concept of defense or how to rotate. Phoenix needs to abandon the DiAntoni style and focus on both sides of the game.
If not, the Suns will never get back to the top.
No. 7: Bad Contracts
4 of 10
Channing Frye had a monster year last season for the Suns.
He was rewarded with a five year, $30 million dollar deal. Um, what? Since then his three point percentage has dropped from 44 percent to 37 percent and his field goal percentage has gone from 45 percent to 43 percent.
That's just one of the deals that turned out to be a mistake. Throw in Hakim Warrick and Josh Childress and you've got some bad contracts that need to be scrapped.
No. 6: Lack of Youth
5 of 10
The Suns aren't exactly what you'd call a young team.
Phoenix's top three players, Steve Nash, Grant Hill and Vince Carter, are all 33 or older, with Hill being 38 and Nash at 36. The window is already closed on the Suns and it's not like you can build around those guys to win a title.
The Suns need to get some young players and assets in there to make the team better down the line.
No. 5: Lack of Physicality
6 of 10
The Suns have some big guys, but there's not a lot of muscle there.
Robin Lopez is soft and it looks like Marcin Gortat might be the best option for Phoenix at the center position. The frontcourt has a lot of finesse players and not enough guys who can do the dirty work down low on a nightly basis.
Phoenix needs more guys who will get down there and scrap and less guys to spread the floor and take jump shots.
No. 4: Aging Star
7 of 10
Steve Nash has meant so much to the Phoenix Suns for so long, but at some point, it has to come to an end.
Nash isn't going to bring a title to the Suns and he deserves a chance to go somewhere and try and win one before his career is up. There are plenty of contenders that would be interested in having Nash on their team to make a run for a championship.
It's just what's best for both parties at this point, even if he puts people in the seats.
No. 3: Crowded Western Conference
8 of 10
The Western Conference has been stacked for years and this year is no exception.
There is the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers and then when you throw in teams like San Antonio, Dallas, Oklahoma City and New Orleans, and that's not mentioning teams like Portland and Denver, you've got quite the field there.
Does anyone think Phoenix can compete with those teams? Honestly?
No. 2: Recent Struggles
9 of 10
In the past week, the Suns have lost to the Pistons and the Sixers.
That's not something a proud franchise like the Suns should be doing. The Suns collapsed against the Pistons and then were blown out of the building by the Sixers last night. It wasn't close and Phoenix was down 20 at one point.
If that isn't a sign to rebuild, I don't know what is.
No. 1: Finish What You Started
10 of 10
When you look at the trade the Suns pulled off with the Orlando Magic, it looks like a rebuilding move.
The Suns can let Vince Carter go after the season, and you have to believe that we'll see that happen with Carter's struggles this year. Not only that, but the Suns got out from under Hedo Turkoglu's horrible contract and got young roleplayers like Marcin Gortat and Mickael Pietrus.
If you're going to make moves like that, just pull the trigger and bring the whole thing down.
