Miami Dolphins Name Former Browns OC Brian Daboll Offensive Coordinator

Thomas GaliciaJan 17, 2011

After flirting with names such as Ray Sherman and Brad Childress, Tony Sparano has found his replacement for the much maligned Dan Henning at Offensive Coordinator.

According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, the Dolphins will name former Cleveland Browns Offensive Coordinator Brian Daboll to the same position with Miami either later Monday or Tuesday.

Daboll has been the Browns Offensive Coordinator since 2009 when Mangini was hired as Browns head coach, and worked under Mangini with the Jets as their Quarterbacks Coach from 2006-2008. Prior to working with Mangini in New York and Cleveland, he was an assistant in New England, first as a defensive assistant, then as a Wide Receivers Coach, from 2000-2006.

Last season the Browns ranked 29th in total offense and 29th in passing offense, however they were ranked 20th in rushing thanks mainly to Peyton Hillis.

However, give Daboll credit to help develop Colt McCoy, who did miss, and Daboll also has a previous relationship with Dolphins QB Chad Pennington from their days with the New York Jets.

I'll be the first to admit that I do not know too much about Daboll other than the facts presented to me. Based off of his past, I highly doubt that this Dolphins offense will be any different than under Henning, however the fact that he helped to develop McCoy with the Browns (who did look better when he played at times then Chad Henne) does show some promise.

But more likely than not, this was more of a comfort hire by Sparano and Ireland than one that would shake things up too much. Daboll does not look like someone who would deviate much from Henning's system, however it does help that he is only 35 years old, so maybe some young blood in the coaching staff will lead to more risks being taken; which was a complaint about the Dolphins offense under Henning.

Personally, I would've tried to promote former QB Coach David Lee, who has since left to become the Offensive Coordinator at Ole Miss, if this was the direction that the Dolphins were going to take.

Only time will tell whether or not this was the correct hire for the Miami Dolphins to make, however based off of the past, I'm sure that many Dolphins fans will be against it.
