Miami Heat: Should Look Towards Chauncey Billups for a PG

Sam LJan 17, 2011

Denver Nuggets point guard Chauncey Billups has been openly shopped, mainly in a deal involving Carmelo Anthony. However, at this point, a team that has a real need for Billups has appeared—the Miami Heat.

The Heat are in desperate need of a PG, someone who can hit shots but is there mainly to dish it out to the the three kings—James, Wade and Bosh. Billups has a history of being a very clutch PG who can make great passes and hit the big shot when he's needed to.

Mario Chalmers has shown glimpses of greatness and would probably be a perfect backup to Billups, but he doesn't belong behind struggling Carlos Arroyo. Arroyo has appeared selfish and seems to desire to be the fourth superstar, a position that has no need to be filled.

If Arroyo doesn't learn to pass, he will be replaced, and Billups is the lead candidate. LeBron James can play point guard, or if you prefer "point forward," but he is better off getting the passes than dishing them. Wade is the perfect compliment to any point but he can't really run it himself.

The real question is what the Nuggets will require to ship Billups. Names like Udonis Haslem and James Jones have to come up, and I have to assume Mike Miller's and Arroyo's will as well. Can the Heat afford Billups? That is the question that arises, and with his $13 million contract, they may have to ship off any combination of the above names to bring him in.

Billups is averaging 16 points and five assists per game this year, fairly impressive numbers and that would complete the Heat. Arroyo gets a mere two assists and six points per game and Chalmers' numbers are similar. The Heat have also needed someone to hit that game-winning shot, and while you'd think one of their three superstars would be the main guy, they haven't been. Too many games have been lost in the very late stages, a time of the game where Chauncey Billups is especially proven.

Other names that the Heat could look towards are Tayshaun Prince of the Pistons as a veteran name, or if they want a point guard, possibly the 76ers' Louis Williams.
