Carmelo Anthony Trade Rumors: Would Memphis Grizzlies Send OJ Mayo to Denver?

Ronnie HampstonJan 16, 2011

In recent news, Carmelo Anthony trade talk have been the topic of discussion as of late.

Rumors have been heating up about the possible trade between the Memphis Grizzlies and Denver Nuggets. The Grizzlies would have to trade O.J. Mayo and future draft pics in order to land Carmelo Anthony.

This time of year, trade rumors are common with the deadline approaching in February.

Before the season, began Carmelo Anthony and the Denver Nuggets never agreed to a contract extension.

The trade has no value for the Memphis Grizzlies. The Denver Nuggets would receive a promising player in OJ Mayo and multiple draft picks.

Whoever trades for Anthony will have to risk a lot in order to obtain the superstar player. Draft picks and expiring contracts are a huge part of the deal. A team can have a lot of flexibility in the future with multiple draft picks and cash to lure free agents.

Will the Memphis Grizzlies risk their future to have Carmelo Anthony for a short term period? The answer should be no.

Not trading for Carmelo would make perfect sense for the Grizzlies.

Carmelo Anthony has mentioned that he will only sign a long term contract with the New York Knicks. It would not make sense to dump draft picks and O.J. Mayo to land Carmelo Anthony.

A trade of this magnitude would set the Grizzlies back, because Carmelo Anthony would refuse to sign a long term contract.

It would benefit the Grizzlies if they kept Mayo until another possible trade destination comes up. Anthony is a superstar and is a franchise player, but it would not be worth it to throw away future draft picks and a promising talent such as Mayo.

The Grizzlies have developed great chemistry over the past few seasons. Trading Mayo might not be the best idea as of now. Trading for a superstar player always sounds like a great move.

In this case, it will only hurt the organization due to the lack of a long term commitment from Melo.

Only time will tell about the future of OJ Mayo and the Memphis Grizzlies. I think it's evident that Mayo will not be shopping for houses in the Mile High City.
