NBA Rankings: Boston Celtics Point Guard Rajon Rondo Is the Undisputed NBA MVP
Rajon Rondo beat the San Antonio Spurs by himself tonight, nearly amassing a quadruple double. Rondo is not only the best point guard in the NBA, he is the MVP of the league, and it's not even close.
The MVP award is a value award, not a most outstanding award. This seems obvious, yet people don't treat the MVP as a value award. Fans look too much into stats.
Measuring a player's value cannot be determined solely on numbers found in the statbook. A deeper, more in depth analysis is required to determine the true league MVP.
Rondo impacts every single phase of the game, and does a bit of everything for the Celtics.
He is the best rebounding guard in basketball, and he is a superb defensive player.
After leading the NBA in steals and being selected to the all-NBA defensive first team last season, Rondo finally received the recognition his defensive prowess has deserved.
Rondo is also an amazing passer. He's not the most flashy passer, but he hits guys in the right spot where they can get a good shot off in rhythm.
Receiving a pass in your hands while in a shooting motion can be the difference between a make and a miss.
Casual basketball fans won't realize the effectiveness of Rondo's passing, but NBA players are well aware.
Grizzlies guard OJ Mayo said he would choose Rondo if he had the choice to select any point guard to play with.
Speaking to TNT, Mayo shared his feelings on Rondo.
"If I had to choose one to play with [point guard], I think it would be [Boston's] Rajon Rondo, just because he gets guys the ball in the right spots," Mayo explained when asked to name the best in the league. "Any scorer or shooter or big man would love to play with a point guard like that."
Rondo runs an offense better than any player in the league, and can score when he needs to. The knock on Rondo's game is that he's a poor shooter.
While he's still not a great outside threat, Rondo can score from the outside when he needs to, and remains a great scorer when penetrating into the paint.
The Celtics are clearly a worse team without Rondo, and during the stretches of the season he's missed games due to injury, the Celtics have been stagnant on offense, and worse defensively.
Against the Spurs tonight, Rondo had 22 assists and six steals. No point guard has as many 20+ assist games as Rondo, and it's not because he has so many great players to pass to.
Rondo realizes which players are most effective in certain situations. His stubbornness and leadership has helped him earn the respect of the many veterans on the Celtics roster.
It's unusual for a young point guard to have the trust and respect that Rondo has when playing with established veterans.
Doc Rivers knows his team will go as far as Rondo will take them. When Kevin Garnett missed the 2009 NBA playoffs, the Celtics were without their best player, and the result was a second round exit to the Magic.
In 2011, the Celtics best player is Rajon Rondo, and with him, the Celtics will win the NBA Finals. Without their MVP, the Celtics are a the third best team in the east.
Rondo is the most valuable player to his team in the NBA. Yes, Kobe is very valuable to the Lakers, as is Derrick Rose to the Bulls, and Kevin Durant with Oklahoma City.
But Rondo makes the Celtics better in every phase of the game when he's on the floor, and puts his teammates in positions where they can succeed.
There are many players worthy of MVP consideration, but the player with the most value in the NBA, is Rajon Rondo.
