NHL Trade Rumors: 10 Winter Classic Players That Could Be Traded

Donald WoodJan 3, 2011

Most of these players won’t be moved.

These are just the players with the biggest potential to be traded as the deadline approaches or sign elsewhere in the offseason.

The Winter Classic was a great game and great for the sport.  I hope this shows the rest of the USA and all of these TV bigwigs that the NHL can hold its own in prime time.

Enjoy the slideshow and the new year!

Tom Poti, D, Washington Capitals

I feel like the weakest part of the Capitals team is its defense.  It’s not terrible, but it’s definitely the most vulnerable aspect of the team.

Poti could be a trading chip if the Capitals go after a younger defender with more long-term potential.

I don’t think he will be moved, but if the Capitals want to re-sign Semin, people are going to have to be moved.

Arron Asham, F, Pittsburgh Penguins

Arron Asham came to Pittsburgh from Philadelphia and has done well for what he was brought in for.  Asham doesn’t bring offensive numbers but he brings a strong, physical play to the ice.

Asham is a tough customer. A team looking for depth at forward or a protector for their star player may look to Pittsburgh.

If Pittsburgh lets him go, they may be able to snag some quality prospects for him from a team like Los Angeles.

Scott Hannan, D, Washington Capitals

As the kinks are still being worked out in Hannan’s transfer to Washington, it will have to be seen how well he fits in Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau’s system.

Scott Hannan is a solid defensive defenseman and would be a good addition to a team that needs help shutting down the opposition.

Hannan played in San Jose and that, to me, would be the perfect fit for him again.  The Sharks need help defensively and the Capitals may be able to pry away a young forward to replace Semin if he leaves.

Pascal Dupuis, F, Pittsburgh Penguins

Pascal Dupuis has been a solid forward for the Penguins, but he should be doing better than he has with Crosby centering his line at times.

One of the reasons Crosby’s point totals aren’t as high as they should be is because of the quality of talent around him.

Dupuis could be moved, along with some of the other mediocre talent at the forward position, for some quality prospects and picks.

It may not be the best move for this year, but going forward it could maximize Crosby’s effectiveness.

Mike Knuble, F, Washington Capitals

As an older player, Knuble would bring a veteran presence to a young team.  With that said, I feel like he is a big part of what the Capitals are doing on offense.

Washington looks to be going in a new direction this offseason, with the possible departure of Alexander Semin.  Knuble could be moved as well.

Knuble doesn’t hold much value, but on a team like St. Louis or Edmonton, he could be a good teacher on the ice for the young stars.

Zbynek Michalek, D, Pittsburgh Penguins

Michalek is another defender who could be moved in favor of a younger defender with more upside.

Since the Penguins are in the midst of a run towards a championship, they probably won’t shakeup their defense.

During the offseason or maybe during a surprise move at the deadline, Michalek may be moved in favor of an NHL-ready prospect or a prospect that’s close to NHL ready.

Brooks Orpik, D, Pittsburgh Penguins

The Washington Capitals have some serious decisions to make this offseason.

The goalie situation will be towards the top of the priority list and it still needs to be seen which of the goaltenders will take over as the No. 1.

Both goalies are 22 and full of potential and there is a chance that Washington brings them both back at least for next year.

If the Capitals can decide which of these two goaltenders they want to lead them into the future, they could probably get some quality compensation for the other.

Maxime Talbot, F, Pittsburgh Penguins

Talbot is an agitator who loves to get under the opposition’s skin.  He is damn good at what he does.

The Penguins might look to move Talbot in favor of some younger talent or even picks.  There are plenty of teams looking to add grit and Talbot might be their man.

Talbot has been good in Pittsburgh and I don’t really see them moving him anytime soon.

Alexander Semin, F, Washington Capitals

I do not think Washington can re-sign Alex Semin after this season.  He will demand too much money and the Capitals need to think about their cap situation.

Semin knows he will likely be the most highly-touted free agent of the upcoming offseason and he will most likely try to get the most money.

The Capitals probably won’t move him because of the nucleus the team has and the fact that they are making a legitimate push for a championship.
