Jarome Iginla: 10 Trade Destinations Now That Darryl Sutter is Gone
NHL.com is reporting that Calgary Flames executive vice president and general manager Darryl Sutter has resigned and former Tampa Bay Lightning general manager Jay Feaster has been appointed acting general manager, giving him full control of all day-to-day hockey operations for the club.
Feaster was the GM in Tampa Bay during the Stanley Cup win in 2004 and maybe his know-how and willingness to make moves will change the landscape of the Flames.
This news could be the first foot to drop in the long walk away from Calgary for Iginla. The Sutters wouldn’t move Iginla but Feaster could make a move quickly. Feaster will be trying to keep his job and if an offer comes along that blows him away, he would be quick to pull the trigger.
Now that Sutter isn’t in control anymore, Iginla’s palms just got a little sweaty.
The following is a list of 10 possible destinations for Jarome Iginla now that he is back on the market.
Happy New Year and Enjoy!
Dallas Stars

It would definitely be strange to see Jarome Iginla in a Dallas Stars uniform.
There has been talk of sending Iginla to Texas for Brad Richards. There would probably be some minor parts to the machine, but these two players would be at the center.
The money situation is close so that won’t be an issue with another minor player. This is all dependent on both players waiving their no trade and no movement clauses in their contracts.
I don’t think this deal has much strength but it is never out of the realm of possibility.
St. Louis Blues

With all of the injuries at the forward position for the Blues, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the team go hard after Jarome Iginla.
Iginla would have to agree to be moved to a team that is not a winner and I don’t know what the likelihood of that would be. I do think he is ready to get out of Calgary and the bright lights of St. Louis hockey could be a great change.
For the Blues, the move would be great, if they compensated Calgary with prospects and picks and maybe an Eric Brewer or Brad Boyes type of player.
The Blues organization would get a proven leader and a good influence on the whole organization.
St. Louis deserves a winning team.
Toronto Maple Leafs

As has been the recent custom of the Maple Leafs, they have fallen out of contention early in the season.
They need a big-time move to shake the organization to its core. Getting Iginla wouldn’t be the greatest long-term plan but it could bring a winning mentality to an organization that doesn’t have one.
Dion Phaneuf would rekindle his rapport with Iginla and they may bring the best out of each other. They both seem to need a push and maybe they can push each other.
Maybe Kris Versteeg could be dealt or Tomas Kaberle, but someone has to go on this Maple Leafs team.
Boston Bruins

The Boston Bruins are a good defensive team with strong goaltending. Those are two main factors in building a team that can make deep playoff runs.
The other factor is offense and Jarome Iginla would bring a big presence in front of the net.
Imagine if you will, Iginla deflecting Zdeno Chara shots. Wow.
The Bruins have been rumored to be shopping Marc Savard so this may be a possible way for both players to get out of less-than-desirable situations.
Anaheim Ducks
5 of 11
This would take some hard work to get done but it would be a good move for both organizations.
The Ducks would get a veteran leader who could help in every aspect of the game and make them a serious playoff contender.
The Flames would get some good prospects and picks and maybe even a player like Jason Blake could be involved in the move.
Anaheim is close to being a dangerous team again and Jarome Iginla would be a great addition to that offense.
Ottawa Senators

Jarome Iginla for Jason Spezza.
Boom. I just fixed everything.
In all honesty, it wouldn’t be a terrible move for either team.
Calgary could get a good young forward (27) in Spezza, who could be a big part of the framework as the organization moves forward.
Ottawa would get a bona fide leader to help a team on the cusp of playoff contention over the edge. He would play second fiddle to Daniel Alfredsson but if he accepts the move, I don’t think it will be an issue.
Philadelphia Flyers

This is another deal that would take some fine-tuning but a GM like Paul Holmgren could work this out.
The rumor I heard was that the Flyers would try to move forward Scott Hartnell, defenseman Matt Walker, and prospects to get Jarome Iginla.
Iginla would add Cup experience to a team that is already looking to win the Cup this year.
Iginla is as good defensively as he is offensively and that would be an asset the Flyers would look for, especially during playoff time.
Calgary would add defensive depth and the hope would be that Scott Hartnell brings a spark to a stagnant Flames locker room.
Los Angeles Kings

These two teams are like passing ships in the night.
Jarome Iginla would almost certainly waive his no-trade clause to take a shot at playing in Los Angeles. The team is full of young talent that could energize Iginla and bring out the old Jarome.
The Kings could send good prospects and maybe a player like Justin Williams or Jarret Stoll to Calgary to compensate in the trade.
The move would be a good way for Calgary to start to rebuild and the Kings to become one of the elite teams in the league.
Imagine a powerplay unit of Kopitar-Brown-Iginla-Doughty-Johnson! Forget San Jose!
Tampa Bay Lightning
9 of 11
This deal would have to be for prospects and picks because most of the big names on the Lightning have no-trade clauses or no-movement clauses.
The deal to Tampa Bay had little validity until the firing of Flames GM Darryl Sutter. With Sutter’s firing comes the hiring of former Lightning GM Jay Feaster and with Feaster comes a relationship with the management in Tampa Bay.
Steve Yzerman might just be green enough to make a big deal sending a lot in return for Iginla.
As the season progresses, it will be interesting to see how Calgary and Tampa Bay deal with each other and if the big deal comes from these two squads.
Columbus Blue Jackets
10 of 11
The Columbus Blue Jackets were one of the most intriguing of all the rumors to me.
Rick Nash and Jarome Iginla playing on the same team would be pretty amazing. The supporting cast in Columbus could be better if they had a veteran guide to show them how to win in the NHL.
The Blue Jackets organization has a plethora of young talent and it would be easy for management to put a deal together.
If Iginla would waive his no-trade clause, this might be a great move for both teams.
