NBA Trade Rumors: Could Baron Davis Wind Up with the Charlotte Bobcats?

Ethan NorofDec 24, 2010

It seems that just about everybody in Charlotte has grown tired of waiting for D.J. Augustin to develop.

With the Bobcats record quickly sinking and Larry Brown recently resigning as head coach, it's clear that the team needs to make a move to shake up the roster.

The team has clamored for some time to acquire a veteran point guard to run the offense, and it seems that the wheels may finally be in motion to do just that. Baron Davis has clearly worn out his welcome with the Clippers, and a fresh start in a new place may be just what he needs to revitalize his career.

Despite B-Diddy's behemoth contract, this is a deal that could actually make sense for both sides. The proposed deal would send Baron Davis to the Charlotte franchise where he spent his first five seasons, and the Clippers would receive Augustin, big man DeSagana Diop and swingman Matt Carroll.

Why It Works for Charlotte

As mentioned above, the Bobcats are simply tired of waiting for Augustin to develop into a point guard capable of running the offense. It seems that the front office has given up the high hope that they once had for the Texas product and seem ready to move forward without him.

Additionally, shedding the overpaid Diop and the seldom used Carroll would give them the financial flexibility required to acquire Davis and keep talented stars Stephen Jackson and Gerald Wallace on the roster. Davis would finally have some new tools to play with, and would get the considerable burn that he desires on a nightly basis with only Shaun Livingston and an unproven Sherron Collins backing him up.

Why It Works for Los Angeles

It's no secret that the Clippers are desperately trying to unload Davis, and here is the perfect opportunity. Although it's unknown whether or not the Clips feel that Augustin can handle a full-time starting gig, they also have rookie Eric Bledsoe in the fold, and a timeshare between the two would not be the worst thing as they each continue to develop.

Also, with Chris Kaman injured and DeAndre Jordan still battling bouts of inconsistency, Diop would provide some much-needed relief along the front line for the other team in L.A. While Carroll isn't much more than a throw-in, it's better than the Clippers deciding to roll with Jarron Collins on the roster.

While this probably isn't the blockbuster trade that fans would like to see their respective teams make, it could be a very rare deal where both sides stand to benefit dramatically and really improve the roster in executing the deal.
