Carmelo Anthony Trade Rumors: First He's Traded, Then He's Not
While it appeared to be true for a while, this was just an example of the power that social media has to convince people. Carmelo Anthony, by all current indications, will remain on the Nuggets for the time being. The following documents how this drama unfolded.
Carmelo Anthony has reportedly been traded to the New Jersey Nets, as the team is said to have agreed to a deal with the Denver Nuggets some time around midnight eastern time.
The key piece in the trade seems to be the rookie from Georgia Tech, Derrick Favors. More details will be added later as they become available.
This is obviously huge news as it totally changes the Nets' hopes for the season. General manager Mikhail Prokhorov has finally made his big splash in revamping the Nets' roster.
As for Carmelo Anthony, we now should be able to find out whether or not there was any truth to his statement that he would only sign an extension with the New York Knicks. New Jersey is close to New York, but it isn't exactly what he was hoping for.
As for Denver, they clearly would lose a significant talent as Anthony is an established superstar, while Favors is still a raw, young player.
However, the Nuggets have to be glad that they've finally ended the headache of Anthony trade rumors.
Anthony is averaging 23.1 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game this season in 34:47 per game while Favors is putting up 7.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 0.1 assists per game this season in 18:41 per game.
So to recap, it appears as though the Denver Nuggets have traded Carmelo Anthony to the New Jersey Nets and that Derrick Favors will be going to the Nuggets as some compensation.
More details to be added below as they become available.
Update at 12:25 AM ET
The report was originally broken by The Denver Channel, an ABC affiliate. The specific reporter was Lionel Bienvenu.
It seems as though this trade will have been made possible because of the Sasha Vujacic trade earlier in the day.
In that trade, the Nets received Vujacic, the Houston Rockets protected 2012 first-round pick, and a 2011 first-round pick from the Los Angeles Lakers.
Supposedly these picks helped seal the deal in making an attractive offer to the Nuggets.
Update at 1:05 AM ET
According to NBC Sports, Adrian Wojnarowski says that he discussed this with a high-ranking Nuggets official who said that the report of a trade is "completely and utterly false."
Chris Tomasson has also said, "“A Nuggets official said rumor is false. I just talked to Melo and he said, ‘It’s terrible. There’s no truth to it.’”
It appears as though the Carmelo saga is still not over.
Here is a summary of what exactly happened during this false report: CBS Sports explains.
